Is It advisable to Join the Ashram for a Teenager?

Q: I told my family that I want to go to Pondicherry after graduation to server Her and live there only forever. But I am advised to take some time to think about it, and I have also many questions. Please advise, I don’t want to waste my life without serving her, and how do I serve Her outside the Ashram?

ALOKDA: Maa is everywhere and the world is everywhere. This is a fundamental truth that we must always remember. It is true that the Ashram does facilitate the yoga in certain ways, especially because of the Samadhi and Her touch and the intense supramental vibration in the atmosphere. Yet each one receives and progresses according to one’s receptivity and openness. There are everywhere only a few people who respond to the core demands of the central aim that gave birth to an idea or an institution. This is especially so if the aim is high and something that has never been even conceived before. This difficulty is here as well. However since the activities of the Ashram and its basic lifestyle has been organised keeping this central goal in mind and also since the Mother has built it as a special formation for the practice of the yoga it does facilitate the sadhana of the Integral Yoga. That is something that cannot be denied.

Of course different people come for different purposes but that is their concern and the Divine’s. Yet by the very fact that they have landed here and have at least aspired however momentarily and imperfectly to strive for something higher and more beautiful, they deserve our salutations. Even if they fall and fail at least they tried something high and beautiful rather than the normal life of human beings that is centered largely around their physical-vital-emotional needs with some sprinkling of intellectual spice and rare moments of a spiritual upsurge. Having said that it is important to remember that not all are called upon or meant to practice the yoga in the Ashram setting. Different people follow different paths and according to their inner needs and the experiences they still must have the Divine and the world-forces arrange the events and circumstances until man is ready to leave behind everything and follow the path and the goal opened before him. Each one must feel his way through life and move towards the Goal as the path opens up step by step depending upon the choices we make and the approach and the attitude we take.

For a person who has just begun the great journey of life it is better to have some experience of life before thinking about joining the Ashram permanently. It is better to face and grapple with the forces that challenge us and our right to grow divine rather than come here prematurely and remain drawn to the world and its ways that meander far and long before man takes the decisive turn.

Best therefore for you would be to study and earn some livelihood. Meanwhile stay inwardly connected to Her and come here from time to time. Leave the rest for Time and Grace to unveil. We cannot plan the entire journey. It is the first step that is given to us and the goal towards which we must move. take that first step and it is to study and equip yourself for Her Work while remembering Her and offering all to Her inwardly.

Play of Forces

Added to this primary source of disharmony, there are secondary causes as well. These arise due to the fact that Man is neither alone nor isolated in the cosmos. He himself is one field for the complex play of forces that weave the fabric of his nature. But in a deeper view of things everything in this cosmos can be seen and understood in terms of energies and forces. These are broadly of three or four categories. There are the gross physical forces that material Science studies. There are also the subtle forces that psychological Science tries to explore. Finally, there are occult forces hidden to our present abilities and capacities for perception and conception. To use the term from Indian Thought, these forces can be each categorized by their action as forces of creation or constructive forces, forces of preservation or balancing forces, forces of disintegration or destructive forces. Indian Thought gave to these forces significant names of Rajas (constructive and creative), Sattwa (preserving and balancing), Tamas (destroying and disintegrative). The respective beings and powers behind these three are Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, the trinity of Indian spiritual thought and vision. Illnesses also arise when there is an imbalance between these forces either due to an unequal stress in the nature or due to coming in contact and proximity with one or the other.

Let us take an example, words, written or spoken, music that is expressed, food, air, water, organisms, etc. are all gross forces and each exercise influence us to a certain degree. The corresponding subtle forces would be Thought, inner harmony and rhythm, feelings, strength, will etc. The occult element would be the various types of energies and beings that enter into us unseen and move us even without our knowledge. Now, words of Thought, food, air, feelings, organisms, people, plants, for that matter anything can have on us a destructive, constructive or preservative influence. Indian thought elaborately classified these phenomena and discovered that each and every object or form can be resolved into varying degrees of combination of five elements, namely space (etheric vibrations), air (movement), water (attraction and repulsion), fire (energizing a form), earth (concretizing, precipitating, gravitational). Different activities of life require different elements. However, if the use of one of these elements is in excess or in deficiency compared to the others, the balance is disturbed leading to a state of disharmony and illness.

Finally, we have a whole range of physical and biological phenomenon which can upset the state of harmony and trigger an imbalance. This means that the vision of Integral Health provides us with a comprehensive understanding of health and illness, and, man’s relation with the world around. It takes into account and does not exclude physical causes of health and illness. But it sees them in a New Light, thereby allowing a deeper and more holistic understanding. Similarly Integral Health takes into account and does not exclude different forms of healing practices that mankind has evolved so far. But here too it sees them in a New Light providing us with a greater flexibility and a more holistic approach.

Songs of the Soul: October 18, 2024

Mother Divine, our most beautiful, most precious moments are those when we are alone with Thee. As a mother You know and provide all that we need inwardly and outwardly even before we have asked or even become conscious of it.

Mother, sweet Mother, as a Guide, You not only lead us through the paths meant for us, but also protect us against the dangers within and without, most of all the danger from our own self. Not only do You Guide and Protect, in all critical moments You carry us safe in Your arms and it is only when we have crossed the perilous bridge do we realize what the passage meant.

As a Friend and Confidante, it is You alone who listens and understands not just the words but the thought, feeling, intent and everything else that is behind it. Indeed You know us more than anyone including what we ourselves can know, yet who never judges or condemns but is always there to help, to heal, to succour and even to enjoy together. Your counsel looks beyond the moment and sees the yet unborn future. Your denials are a Compassion and if You let us go through the difficulties and challenges of life it is only to help us progress fast and draw nearer to Thee.

What else and whom else would one need. The whole world and its powers are a travesty of Thy Beauty and Light and Love and Power. What else can one want but to walk with You alone on any and every path through which You choose to take us, O eternal Guide, Friend, Beloved….

May our hearts grow tranquil and free. May our thoughts grow luminous and pure. May our body grow receptive to Thy touch.

What is the Right Way for a Devotee to Raise a Child?

Q: I do feel that parenting is a duty given to me by the Divine Mother and I want to do it right. I tend to give much freedom, while other parents advise me to apply strict discipline and firm instruction. What is the right way?

ALOKDA: There are no standard rule books of life, especially in terms of bringing up children in times of rapid transition as we witness today. The child’s mother is best equipped to understand the child. So I would suggest go by your deepest maternal instincts and pray for your child so that you bring her in indirect contact with the Divine Mother.

Notes on Integral Health

The vision of Integral Health is based on an integral understanding of man. The truths of integral healing are derived from Sri Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga and his Guidance along with the Mother, on various aspects of health and healing. Taken in its totality, it is a comprehensive guidance on each and every aspect of human existence, right from our bodily to the highest spiritual existence. Sri Aurobindo’s teaching also reconnects man, the mental being, to his larger cosmic and Divine existence. In this total vision we do not see things and events in isolation but as part of a larger movement of Nature towards realizing greater and greater degree of Perfection through the various forms She has evolved so far.

The human body is one such form and though, largely still of an animal make, it hides within itself new, higher and greater possibilities that are bound to emerge in due course of Time. However, unlike the animal, man can collaborate in the process through an integral yoga.

Or he can resist the change.

The result is an evolutionary conflict that we experience within and around. The past and the future both act upon man. He feels the pull of the dark subconscient energies accumulated and inherited from the earth’s past. He also feels drawn, however vaguely, to the bright Superconscient which is Earth’s Destiny. In man these two currents meet, often in disharmony with each other. He is caught between the forces of ‘natural’ disintegration and the forces of New Creation which visit his heart and mind thereby creating hope, idealism and dreams of a better humanity and earth. It is this inner conflict that is the primary cause of disharmony in man. Humanity experiences it as an inner ‘unease’ and a ‘ restless urge’ to find ‘something’ or ‘someone’ who can give it the much needed Peace and Joy and Truth and Freedom and Love. At first he seeks these things outside through objects and persons and outer circumstances. But as he evolves and becomes aware of a larger subjective existence within himself, he seeks them inside, in the spaces of his inner being. But until he has found the right balance between the inner and the outer, his ‘unease’ has a tendency to precipitate into a ‘disease’. The disease serves to remind him that there is a need to rediscover the threads of his life and to reorient them. It is in fact, an evolutionary door if we thus use it.

Mother Divine,
how much beauty You have lavished upon earth and in such abundance and variety as if all the moods of Infinity found a just place and right balance. The dangerous and the delightful, the vast and the tiniest, all have been woven together in a rich and harmonious tapestry that is constantly changing its hues and scents and colours. There may be life elsewhere and surely there must be but perhaps nowhere could be found this richness of forms than here, upon earth.

Yet amidst all this wonderful harmony and the sense of unity, man seems to be alone and isolated, locked within his mind which is a world in itself, a world that is often not in harmony with the rest, a world often restless, anxious, afraid, turbulent, looking for a safe and stable spot, a secure space where all is peace and beauty and bliss. Yet he refuses to make effort in finding the true and lasting solution as if afraid of losing his littleness that acts as a comfort zone in the vast blue infinity. He has trimmed his wings, tied them neatly and coloured them with impressive colours. But he is afraid to use them for the one main purpose which is to soar and fly.

Maa, for millions of years man has moved as a nomad still searching for his stable home, the home from where he wandered here. Now the day of redemption, the moment of return, with all the experience gained, has come by Thy Grace. Let this Divine hour be not wasted Mother. Let there be no more wanderings any further. We implore Thee, with whatever strength we can summon to fulfill the Yoga this time so that we cross over the perilous bridge from the human to the Divine without lapsing back into the old stupidities. May the earth no more suffer its shadow nor man suffer the fall.

Will Sanskrit Rather Than English Allow to Express Supramental Experiences?

Q: Sir, is there a likelihood for supramental expression to be exclusively in Sanskrit rather than in any European language, which appear to be not sufficiently dynamic to express the Truth at every level?

ALOKDA: The means of supramental expression would be new. In all likelihood a new language that will develop. Just as Sanskrit branched out into several languages and Latin into English, so also perhaps we shall see new means of expression evolving over the next few decades or centuries. No language as of now is capable of expressing the experiences of the New Being.

But yes, Sanskrit is no doubt amazing in terms of its beauty and richness with French coming a close next. English has its own beauty but also number of limitations with rules of grammar. But all existing human languages, including Sanskrit are not sufficient tools to express the inner experiences that are many-layered as well as many-hued and many-toned. They all seem inadequate to the New Consciousness.

Phantoms of the Past

We move ever towards the New and the Unknown. But the New is not always new even as the old is not always old.

The New may be a rediscovery by another age of the old much as a child ‘discovers’ and is thrilled with discovering what his parents and grandparents already know.
The old too may be a partial glimpse ahead of Time of that which the race must realize much later. The dreams of Leonardo Da Vinci were not old and the ancient legends of Daedalus and Icarus were precursors of the Future. The Vedic Rishis and the Chaldean mystics foresaw something that the race was yet to experience. Krishna is still alive in the psychological spaces of man waiting for his call to be heard. Christ and Buddha wait on the threshold of our inner being for humanity to receive their message rightly.

Therefore, as we enter into the New and the Unknown future, we should carefully discern the surviving ghosts and phantoms of a slain past from the early blush of a forthcoming Dawn. The first leads us back to the cycles that have exhausted their purpose, the second to endless new discoveries.

Mother Divine, Maa,
of all the bondages of ignorance, one of the most difficult seems to be human attachments. Even when the heart is free of any longing, yet it suffers from the sufferings of those whom we love and responds to the vibration of true love. Though love itself can be and ought to be beautiful but it tends to get mixed in weak and narrow vessels with egoistic sentimentality, demands and passions and thence degrades into lust and attachments. Very soon its innocence, purity, beauty and intensity is lost in the whirlpool of desires, or its beautiful face gets covered and distorted with insecurities, fears, and will to dominate and worse things to which history has been a witness. Or else it turns into a tepid routine of duty no longer fed by the flaming tongue of sacrifice. Of all the Godheads, Love is the most demanding. If Ananda requires a complete abolition of desires and pleasure seeking, Love demands a complete self-giving, a glad sacrifice of all one is, without any demand, even of acknowledgement or reciprocation. That is why even when love turns towards Thee to realise its highest possibility, it is unable to soar beyond bhakti and devotion full of demands, to utter love, self giving and abandonment to Thee, demanding nothing except the joy of loving Thee eternally.

Maa, Thou hast taught us by example the great Secret of Love. Thou hast unraveled the great Mystery of Love. Thou hast set into motion the Highest, Intensest, Purest vibration of Love in our hearts. Thy Love purifies, redeems, transforms all with joy and in such a beautiful way that it all seems natural and effortless. Sadhana becomes easy and spontaneous rather than a thing strenuous requiring great effort of tapasya and will. Just to open to Thee and give oneself completely is enough.

Grant that we may be ready for this love and all in us respond to the touch of Thy wonderful Love, O sweet Beloved.
