Why are you doing this yoga?

Q: Bhaya, I have one question – why are you doing this yoga and how have you chosen this path?

ALOKDA: It is not we who chose the Path as much as the Path, or the Goal and the Master who chooses us. But I understand your question since so does it appear from our side as if we are choosing it. The truth of the matter however is that I was not really seeking anything at the time that Sri Aurobindo entered my life or rather took me into His vast infinite life. I was an agnostic since whatever I had read about God and all other philosophies, I could not find my answers in them. I had few experiences also but not sure of what it meant I simply let them slip into some corner of my memory.

My search was for the ultimate meaning of life like many others I suppose. Living life as others do seeking success, fulfilling ambitions, accumulating money and all those things that one normally enjoys and lives for did not attract me. Besides it seemed such a selfish thing to live for, so small and little. Then there was the alternative of spiritual life. But that too seemed selfish since everyone spoke about personal mukti and nirvana or having some kind of bliss or experience by certain practices. All this did not answer my questions about the reason for suffering in this world. It moved me deeply but the standard answer of the karmic theory seemed incomplete. Therefore, having searched whatever I could, I became an Agnostic and thought that best to be a good human being and a good doctor so that I could help those who are suffering. But without any stable Permanent Reality it also seemed a vain thing.

Well it was during this phase that Sri Aurobindo drew me to His heart and I found Him, or rather literally walked into Him in a busy Delhi street, one winter afternoon when I entered a bookstore. There He was in His word body speaking His first phrase to me like a mantra of initiation written in the first page of the book that I opened. He wrote ‘All Life is Yoga.’ Something clicked instantly, like a revelation and I knew I was home. His name kept vibrating lie some heavenly rhythm in my heart and the whole evening, in fact the next two days I was as if in an ecstasy forgetting everything else except to pore through the pages of the heavenly script. It was love at first or shall I say first word. All else that happened was contained in that single phrase whose full meaning and impact is still unfolding before me, – ‘All Life is Yoga’. There was then no calculation, no weighing of options, no looking at advantages and disadvantages, no consideration of difficulties and dangers. In fact there was no option, but to accept all that He said as true, to aspire for what He wanted us to be, to surrender to the New Vision that opened before my soul.

Later the Mother revealed Herself to me and that completely sealed it if there was any other thought ever at all. Once She came or rather drew me to Her then all considerations and questions about the path, the goal everything was gone. Only She remained, at the center and circumference of life, to serve Her and love Her the only joy and purpose of existence.

A Loving Embrace

The law of karma is not so much about reward and punishment but about learning and growth, through action and consequences. In one word it is an evolutionary mechanism rather than a tribunal of Justice which is a human mistranslation of a divine Law.

The Divine does not punish or reward but simply leads us forward by putting a pressure from within and Above, a silent pressure of His Will. If we align with the Will we go faster, if not we slow down, if we actively resist we are pushed strongly as if through blows.

The soul accepts all circumstances with joy and progresses through everything, including what we call as sorrow and misfortune and vice versa, often more through pain than through pleasure. Outer events are not the real issue though the ego takes so much more interest in it.

The real game goes on within and there we discover not the stern hand of a Judge but the loving embrace of the Divine Mother who carries us despite everything. This Love and Grace are the deeper truths that override and even cancel the law of karma, thereby shortening the Path. This is the secret that Sri Aurobindo reveals to us.

Mother Divine, Maa when we glimpse the places that man has not yet made his habitation and compare it with human settlements, one can see what the mind has done with nature and with life upon earth in general. Worse still, what man has done to himself, his own life. Our mental intelligence colluding with an animal nature has made human life so much worse. There are medicines and sophisticated surgery but less and less natural immunity. There are complex designs, bridges and buildings but man lives within these as if trapped in the prison of his ego. He has gathered so much knowledge of the processes of life but not yet its purpose and, while his knowledge has helped him in certain ways, it is at the expense of other, often more crucial things. His means of communication has only estranged him further as he finds himself alone in a world full of people. A multiplication of comforts have robbed him of inner Peace and the joy of being in nature. To acquire more comforts and latest gadgets he is caught in a race held in the noose of money that has become the measure of success and even the basis of relationships.

Poverty, poverty, what an abject darkness and poverty this civilisation has been plunged into in the name of success and progress. On the brink, it is staring at the abyss. What a net of falsehood that has wired the cities with all its amenities and comforts. Yet amidst all this, Thou art here, Sri Aurobindo is here, and Your immortal message that beckons us to rise to a greater higher diviner life. O Hope of hopes, O hope of this lost civilisation, in the name of Earth and its creatures, we implore Thee to save us from this self-chosen doom.

O Hope supreme, O refuge of the lost world and a humanity that has strayed from its straight path. Pull us out of these artificial glares we mistake for the Sun.

How the suffering and difficulties of a soul can come to an end?

Q: When an individual is suffering from his childhood – what can be the reasons behind it, and how and when these difficulties will come to an end?

ALOKDA: A very good question. To understand this we have to understand the field and the knower of the field. The field is the whole gamut and play of forces that comprises the world existence, more specifically the earth nature into which the soul enters. This rendezvous of soul and nature is a win-win situation for both if we see it in the larger perspective for each time nature comes in contact with the soul it receives an impetus to progress and evolve towards Light and Beauty. As to the soul it feels the burden of nature as a load but as it passes from life to life the soul grows stronger until one day it becomes her Lord.

In the first few lives the soul is like a slave held captive to Nature as in a prison. But as it grows it becomes more and more its master and lord. In the first few lives the soul is as if dragged helplessly by the forces of nature. During this phase when the soul is developing out of its infancy towards adulthood it may try unusual things such as take a leap cutting through layers of darkness and even go through a hell of outer suffering to hasten the purifying ordeal. Finally, it is out of the dense dark fields and enters a quieter zone, progressively moving towards freedom away from the school of ignorance and the law of suffering.

An Integral View of Health (5) An Experiential Approach

This is the Integral view of health as we understand it. It is less of a conceptual and more an experiential view. Its justification lies not so much in the discoveries of modern science but in the sheer mass of empirical evidence accumulated over the centuries since man first began to walk on earth and lift his head to the sun. The experience has been verified throughout the ages by men and women of all races, education and culture. It is naturally enough understood that when one uses terms like psychic being, or higher levels of energies one is likely to locate them in the body and hence identify physically. But this is not so. The Integral view does not limit itself to the assumption that matter is the sole reality. The limitations of this view lie in the limitations of the human instruments of sensory experience and narrow logic. We shall attempt to expand this model in subsequent issues but doing so carries the risk of reducing it into a rigid formula. That is why only broad outlines are presented. The rest is to be filled up by each according to his individual need and turn of nature. The subscribers to these views may be few because the mind of humanity is still conditioned by the physical discoveries of science.

Thus we find ourselves far removed from the traditional view of health and body as well as psychological fitness. To discover health one has to discover its source. The need for health and immortality arises from our soul of which we are usually not conscious. The first step then toward a healthy living is to discover this secret soul in us. Next, we have to take each and every activity of our physical-nervous-mental being as an opportunity for linking up the outer instruments to the soul. Depending upon our present need and turn of nature one can take up one or the other of these to prepare and discipline oneself in the ‘right’ direction and with ‘right’ attitude. Gradually, the whole of life has to become a field of action and work of this kind. Finally, with the aid of the psychic one has to develop an increasing receptivity to higher and higher levels of being till finally, one touches the Truth-Substance. It is then that health will be spontaneous and immunity from illness automatic and total.

Songs of the Soul: November 10, 2024

Mother Divine, let us nestle in Thy arms of Love, free from all fears and cares for Thou art here. Behind all the turbulence and the turmoil You are here with Your hand lifted in a gesture of benediction liberating us from all anxiety and fear to which this human creature is most prone. Though at the apex of earthly creatures, man is also perhaps the most miserable because he, of all beings, carries the burden of an unseen future. Yet behind all the struggles and difficulties there stands Your luminous smile that saves and heals. Amidst all the bitterness and cruelty to which human beings subject themselves and others, You are here lavishing Your boundless Grace upon all if only man could get rid of his self-conceit and open to Thee with humility and learn to receive.

You are here and Your Presence is the assurance that all will be well and that mankind has a beautiful future despite the present clouds and dark appearances.

May all open to Thy Grace. May all respond to Thy Love.

Does the Mother protect evil people if they repeat her Mantra?

Q: I’ve heard people repeating the Mother’s words “The Mother’s protection is with me, nothing bad can happen” even while harming others intentionally. Does it really protect the person even when one says this from one’s ego? How does it work?

ALOKDA: To expect that the Divine will protect someone consciously engaging in evil is in itself a contradiction. Sri Aurobindo has clearly said that there are conditions required to open to the Divine Help such as faith, sincerity and surrender. There is of course such a thing as unconditional protection but it is extremely rare and given only under very special conditions for a very special purpose. Otherwise, no sadhana would be needed. One has to simply say and things will be done magically regardless of the person’s inner state. Well sometimes it can happen but this cannot be made a rule of life or a law of spiritual living.

However we may add that the words of Sri Aurobindo has the power in it to fulfill its promise, the promise of the Divine to man that if he sincerely calls for His help and seeks His Protection, even in His thoughts with faith and trust then regardless of his past, however dark it may be and his present, however evil it may be, the Grace does come and intervene and changes the fixed course of destiny. Not only does it protect him from the hostility around but also from himself and opens the doors for redemption by the Grace. It is similar to the great word of the Gita, the eternal promise of the Godhead in man, his eternal friend and lover, – sarvadharmaparityajya mamekamsharanam vraja. Aham tva sarvapapebhyo mokshisiyami ma suchhah, abandon all dharmas and take refuge in Me Alone, I will deliver thee from all fear and evil, do not grieve.

An Integral View of Health (4) Psychic Culture

These three then are the main approaches to develop the outer instruments so as to make them grow constantly toward higher and higher form – vigorous activity is the first, stillness is next, rhythmic activity the last. To combine the three judiciously would perhaps be ideal. But none of these pursued for their own sake would be useful. These must be linked to the indwelling guide constantly so that they receive the newer fresher, invigorating streams of the nectar of immortality to change their substance into the substance of truth and delight. With practice one can them link up all one’s energies to this soul within us. And this can be done simply by offering all one’s activities material and psychological, food and sleep, thought and feelings, all, without exception to the Source. The more we thus link ourselves, the more will our bodies and mind partake in the nature of this psyche in us which is immortal. Thus, our body shall develop faith where it first had fear, our mind develop a luminous view of the self and world where originally there was pessimism, our life develop a true sense of well-being. It is then alone that health would be a natural attitude of the being.

A word of caution is needed here. For we are very likely to be led into a belief that under such a condition one would be free from all illnesses. This would be a grand presumption which is not true, because:

1. Such an ideal state of a total psychic influence upon the physical and psychological parts is itself not easy. It needs persistence and sincere effort for which few are ready.

2. Even when possible, this itself would not grant a total immunity from illnesses but would create an ideal attitude in the body and mind to spontaneously repel illness, and regain an equilibrium. This is because the fundamental nature of matter and mind does not change. It is only brought under a more direct influence of the healthiest part in us – the soul.

3. Even when higher and higher level of energy act, they too being subject to error and falsehood, the chances of ill-health remain though their nature and means of cure may drastically change.

Finally, as a result of this evolutionary process, a time may come, according to Sri Aurobindo when the very nature of the body would change and become the truth substance not subject to falsehood and hence to pain, disease and death. That would be the perfect state of health. Doctors and drugs would cease as would diseases.

Songs of the Soul: November 9, 2024

Mother Divine, Mother of Love and Beauty and Harmony, Maa may life blossom harmoniously in all its complexity and beauty. May all discordant notes dissolve in the sweet harmony of love. May all that resists and grates and opposes be washed away in the swelling tide of Thy Love. May all be smoothened and released from smallness in the expanding circle of Thy Love. May all division be healed by the sweet and soothing smile of Thy Love. May all that is crude and ugly be refined and purified by the dissolvant of Thy Love.

May Thy Love open for us the way and lead us all the way.
