Our destiny operates at many levels. There is the arrangement of outer circumstances which we ordinarily think of as Fate.
The need to foresee destiny is there in every human being. But it is not given to man as perhaps instead of helping it may create difficulties.
As human beings we want only pleasant thing to happen. We shun pain and do not want it as our share. We wish to know the future so that we can avert painful events.
At the insistence of the queen, the human mother of Savitri, Narad the sage with a capacity of foresight speaks of the destiny that Savitri has with Satyavan.
The Queen, who represents the conventional human wisdom that looks at life from a practical intelligence rather than an idealistic one, now questions life and destiny and God’s plan.
The Queen moved by the irony of Destiny bids Savitri to reverse her choice. Now comes a difficult choice but Savitri is clear and determined that she has loved and chosen Satyavan...
The Queen respects her daughter’s choice but is perplexed by it nevertheless. She expresses her plight to Narad with regard to the ways of Destiny.
The Queen continues to raise questions that have vexed humanity for long whose definitive and comprehensive answers have eluded us.
