Opening remarks
The ways of God are not understood by man. Savitri now reveals something of God’s ways.
His ways challenge
His ways challenge our reason and our sense;
By blind brute movements of an ignorant Force,
By means we slight as small, obscure or base,
A greatness founded upon little things,
He has built a world in the unknowing Void.
The ways of God challenge and baffle our reason and our sense. He uses blind brute movements of an ignorant Force and by slight and small means obscure or base and trivial to build greatness founded upon little things. Thus has He built a world in the unknowing Void.
His forms
His forms he has massed from infinitesimal dust;
His marvels are built from insignificant things.
He builds forms from dust and its infinitesimal particles. He builds marvels from insignificant things.
Incidents of his vast and varied plot
If mind is crippled, life untaught and crude,
If brutal masks are there and evil acts,
They are incidents of his vast and varied plot,
His great and dangerous drama’s needed steps;
He makes with these and all his passion-play,
A play and yet no play but the deep scheme
Of a transcendent Wisdom finding ways
To meet her Lord in the shadow and the Night:
Above her is the vigil of the stars;
Watched by a solitary Infinitude
She embodies in dumb Matter the Divine,
In symbol minds and lives the Absolute.
Though the mind may be crippled and life and life untaught and crude. Though brutal masks are there and evil acts, they are part and incidents of his vast and varied plot. They are the needed steps of his great and dangerous drama. With all these he makes his passion-play. Such is the play and yet no play but the deep scheme of a transcendent Wisdom finding ways to meet her Lord in the darkness and shadow of the Abyss and the Night. Above this wisdom is the vigil of the stars watched by a solitary Infinitude. She embodies the Divine in the robe of dumb Matter and in symbols of the mind there dwells the Absolute.
Miracle-monger
A miracle-monger her mechanical craft;
Matter’s machine worked out the laws of thought,
Life’s engines served the labour of a soul:
The Mighty Mother her creation wrought,
A huge caprice self-bound by iron laws,
And shut God into an enigmatic world:
She lulled the Omniscient into nescient sleep,
Omnipotence on Inertia’s back she drove,
Trod perfectly with divine unconscious steps
The enormous circle of her wonder-works.
Immortality assured itself by death;
The Eternal’s face was seen through drifts of Time.
The works of the Wisdom hidden in the heart of Nature is no less than a doer of miracles. It builds language and laws of thought out of a machine built by Matter. Life’s engines serve the purpose of the soul. The mighty Mother shapes her creation with caprice and yet it is self-bound by iron laws. She shuts God in an enigmatic world and lulls the Omniscient in the sleep of Nescience. She drove Omnipotence on the back of Inertia, treading towards perfection with divine unconscious steps the enormous ever expanding dance of her wonder-works. She assured Immortality by repeatedly passing through the doors of death and shows the face of the Eternal through drifts of Time.
Closing Remarks
Savitri gives us a glimpse of the marvellous workings of Nature which is all indicative of a Wisdom operating in her depths.
