Breath of a Pure Infinite

As when one walks in sleep through luminous dreams
And, conscious, knows the truth their figures mean,
Here where reality was its own dream,
He knew things by their soul and not their shape:
As those who have lived long made one in love
Need word nor sign for heart’s reply to heart,
He met and communed without bar of speech
With beings unveiled by a material frame.

There was a strange spiritual scenery,
A loveliness of lakes and streams and hills,
A flow, a fixity in a soul-space,
And plains and valleys, stretches of soul-joy,
And gardens that were flower-tracts of the spirit,
Its meditations of tinged reverie.

Air was the breath of a pure infinite.

Surface Storms and Smiling Depths

May 26, 1914

On the surface is the storm, the sea is in turmoil, waves clash and leap one on another and break with a mighty uproar. But all the time, under this water in fury, are vast smiling expanses, peaceful and motionless. They look upon the surface agitation as an indispensable act; for matter has to be vigorously churned if it is to become capable of manifesting entirely the divine light. Behind the troubled appearance, behind the struggle and anguish of the conflict, the consciousness remains firm at its post; observing all the movements of the outer being, it intervenes only to rectify direction and position, so as not to allow the play to become too dramatic. This intervention is now firm and a little severe, now ironical, a call to order or a mockery, full always of a strong, gentle, peaceful and smiling benevolence.

In the silence I beheld Thy infinite and eternal Beatitude.

Then softly a prayer rises towards Thee from what is still in the shadow and the struggle: O sweet Master, O supreme Giver of illumination and purity, grant that all substance and every activity may be no more anything other than a constant manifestation of Thy divine Love and Thy sovereign Serenity….

And in my heart is the song of gladness of Thy sublime magnificence.

Agree to Change

It is very important that the vital should agree to change: it must learn to accept conversion. The vital is not in itself anything to be decried: in fact, all energy, dynamism and push comes from it—without it you may be calm and wise and detached, but you will be absolutely immobile and uncreative. The body would be inert, just like a stone, without the force infused into it by the vital. If the vital is left out, you would be able to realise nothing. But like a spirited horse it is liable to be refractory and, therefore, requires good control. You have to keep your reins tight and your whip ready in order to keep the powerful beast in check. Of course, once the vital has consented to be transformed there is no need either of the tight reins or the ready whip: you proceed smoothly towards the goal, leaping lightly over each obstacle in the way. Otherwise, the vital will either stumble over the barriers or fight shy of jumping them. It is no use thinking that all would have been well if there had been no hurdles at all: they are a part of the game and if they are not faced and jumped in this life on earth you will have to surmount a hundred times greater ones on other planes and in other lives. The best thing is to make up your mind once for all and train your vital to run the race here while you are in the body and, if possible, win it. You are sure to win provided your physical mind reforms itself and helps the vital to change, instead of playing the role of a robber who holds down his victim while his accomplice makes a haul of the victim’s property.

Songs of the Soul: November 20, 2024

Supreme Reality, Eternal Truth, Mother Divine, the action of Truth uncovers all the bright and dark passages of our being bringing to the surface beautiful possibilities as well as dark undercurrents running behind and beneath the appearances. Ordinarily the ego keeps them out of our awareness or colours them. All these elements have to be recognised for what they are, removing the dross and the gloss, purified of the baser and crude mixtures, offered to Thee, discarded what needs to be discarded and integrated with the New Life what is ready to change and transform itself. It is a long and complex work. Most often we are not even aware of what lies below the neat surfaces of life. Therefore it is so difficult to understand and appreciate the action of Truth. That is what we see happening in the world at large as well as groups and individuals. What will pass through the crucible and bear the exacting process and what will simply dissolve away, go out of creation, unable to bear the pressure, is something to be seen. But through all this Thy hand of Love is felt holding us, moulding and transforming us. If only we could open the doors to Thy Grace, not shut it off through doubts and blind resistances, if only we consciously and gladly surrender to Thee, to Thy Love, then all will be so much smoother and easier.

Maa may all open to Thy Love with faith and shedding all doubt and diffidence take the leap towards the future.

Fundamentalism

It is often said that religion is the birthplace of fundamentalism.

This is true only if we limit our idea of religion to a set of fixed rituals and narrow dogmas, especially when we believe that our conception of God, our Scripture, our way of life is the only true way. It is this exclusivity that makes a fertile breeding ground for fundamentalism.

But this exclusivity is not the sole property of religions. A scientist vehemently denying God even without taking a serious quest, an ideologue believing his ideology to be the only one that can save mankind and the world, are equally prone to fundamentalism. It may not translate into violent actions that seek to eliminate the ‘non-believers’ but oppose them with loud voices trying to stifle what it does not believe in.

It is therefore not religion but narrowness and an intellectual shallowness, an inability to deeper into the very heart of things, an incapacity to search for higher and higher truths, an intolerance of all that has a different way of life and conception of Reality is the birthplace of fundamentalism.

But Religion, Science, Idealism all have a positive side in their search for a better state and condition of human living. If their different approaches can fuse in a common aspiration, then we may discover something of THAT Reality which exceeds both Science and Religion, is beyond ideas and idealism and yet is the secret Source of all.

Nowadays most farmers are cultivating rice, wheat and vegetables which are bioengineered. Is it bad for our health or not?

Q: Nowadays most farmers are cultivating rice, wheat and vegetables which are bioengineered. Is it bad for our health or not?

ALOKDA: Everything is corrupted and polluted today from the air we breathe to the food we eat and the people we meet. The mind in trying to correct one thing ends up disturbing another.

We can say therefore that all mental solutions are inadequate. Instead of worrying about the possible effects of different types of food we should focus on the discovery of the Divine within us and leave our health and life and destiny entirely in Her hands.

It is true that humanity tends to slide back after a strong evolutionary wave has passed over it lifting it up beyond itself. Yet all is not lost. The sliding back is never a return to the same point. It is a notch above.
Human attractions happen because of the thirst for love in every creature. But since our consciousness is turned outwards we always seek outside what we already carry within us.
