O soul, it is too early to rejoice!

A stillness absolute, incommunicable,
Meets the sheer self-discovery of the soul;
A wall of stillness shuts it from the world,
A gulf of stillness swallows up the sense
And makes unreal all that mind has known,
All that the labouring senses still would weave
Prolonging an imaged unreality.

Self’s vast spiritual silence occupies Space;
Only the Inconceivable is left,
Only the Nameless without space and time:
Abolished is the burdening need of life:
Thought falls from us, we cease from joy and grief;
The ego is dead; we are freed from being and care,
We have done with birth and death and work and fate.

O soul, it is too early to rejoice!

The Victory of Transfiguration

July 11, 1914

The entire physical being would like to be dissolved and reconstituted in an adoration that ould have no bounds. O Lord, Thou who comest to touch Matter as the Messenger of the Supreme Power and Supreme Beatitude, Thou createst the conception of what the total realisation can be. And when the being believed it was definitively invested with Thy sublime mandate, Thou withdrawest, making it understand that it was only a promise, a token of what can be. Alas, what an imperfection in Matter it is that we cannot hold Thee! O Lord, use Thy omnipotence, work the miracle of Thy permanent Presence…. Why so much consideration? We must triumph or perish!…

Victory, victory, victory! We want the victory of Transfiguration!

Work of the Avatar

The consciousness is like a ladder: at each great epoch there has been one great being capable of adding one more step to the ladder and reaching a place where the ordinary consciousness had never been. It is possible to attain a high level and get completely out of the material consciousness; but then one does not retain the ladder, whereas the great achievement of the great epochs of the universe has been the capacity to add one more step to the ladder without losing contact with the material, the capacity to reach the Highest and at the same time connect the top with the bottom instead of letting a kind of emptiness cut off all connection between the different planes. To go up and down and join the top to the bottom is the whole secret of realisation, and that is the work of the Avatar. Each time he adds one more step to the ladder there is a new creation upon earth…. The step which is being added now Sri Aurobindo has called the Supramental; as a result of it, the consciousness will be able to enter the supramental world and yet retain its personal form, its individualisation and then come down to establish here a new creation. Certainly this is not the last, for there are farther ranges of being; but now we are at work to bring down the supramental, to effect a reorganisation of the world, to bring the world back to the true divine order. It is essentially a creation of order, a putting of everything in its true place; and the chief spirit or force, the Shakti active at present is Mahasaraswati, the Goddess of perfect organisation.

Songs of the Soul: December 27, 2024

Mother Divine, Maa, how strange it is that they who believe in Thee call this world a purposeless accident in Time, an unreal illusion, a movement without a basis or collective goal. True, there is in it suffering and pain but there is also joy that one snatches from the jaw of suffering, there is happiness that touches and gladdens the heart for no outer reason. Yes there is evil but there is also the courage that resists, goodness that gives itself in a fire-winged sacrifice of love. There is here, despite the many difficulties, hope and faith and love, moments of peace and tranquility, visions of unearthly beauty, actions that leave the footprints of a god. All this is Maya and duality, it is said, but if it is so, then there must be a purpose in it. For why wouldst Thou allow these countless systems of worlds, these trillions of beings and forces, these billions of stars and galaxies to come into existence, this grand spectacular show if it was only to tell us that all this was a deception and a lie. Whose then is the lie and whose the deception? Surely man, in his over eager pursuit of the door of escape has missed something.

It is Thou who art there in the heart of the universe. It is Thou who hast woven this necklace of stars to outline the body of our unseen Beloved. It is Thou who has brought creation out of the Unknowable so that it can express and manifest what is hidden in the Self. It is Thou who hast given birth to our souls and placed us in the vast gymnasium of Space and Time so that we may grow and become what Thou hast willed us to be. It is Thou who hast put us in the school of ignorance so that experiencing the dualities we may grow into Oneness and be ready to see the Truth and savour the Bliss. How is this straight and simple truth missed, the truth that stares at us from every side.

May we be ready to realise and manifest this truth of our individual destinies. Shunning the narrow paths of selfish escape may we grow into Thy Truth and Vastness and Oneness and Love and Peace and Bliss, into what Thou wouldst want us to be.

Science and Religion

Science is one approach to Truth, Religion is another. Their mutual opposition is simply the opposition in man’s consciousness between the head and the heart. Science seeks to discover Truth through the mind and the intellect. In doing so it suppresses the energies of the heart and assumes that Truth is something like an inert, mechanical, unconscious energy of form. It ends up discovering what it believes in.

Religion, on the other hand, approaches Truth through the heart. It does so by suppressing the energies of the mind and the intellect. It assumes Truth to be a Superconscious Being. Therefore it ends up discovering what it believes and puts its faith into. One is blind in the heart, the other is blind in the mind.

But Truth exceeds all our intellectual formulas and formulations even as it exceeds all our experiences and ways of relating to IT. It is only by rising to a consciousness greater than the mind and the heart, a consciousness in which the two fuse and become ONE, not mutually opposing but supporting and complimenting each other that we can discover the One Integral Reality that expresses Itself in countless ways.

You haven’t encouraged participation of X in the organ donation program – what’s the reason?

Under normal, ordinary circumstances it hardly matters, but as a human being’s consciousness develops further, the donation of an organ means, from the consciousness perspective, a strong interchange and transfer of one’s consciousness into another.

Leaving aside the deep karmic bond that such an action at the time of death creates, it is bound to create a disturbance in the process of departure which takes nearly 24 hours. Organ donation has to be done while the cells are still alive. Life has not fully withdrawn from the body. The departing soul is still collecting its experiences of a lifetime in an intense way. All that is disturbed like asking someone to super hurriedly collect his belongings before the parts are being given to others.

What people do not understand is that death is not a sudden event but a process, sometimes a fairly long and intense process going on for a long time. To disturb this process often means losing things that one has gathered during life that are imprinted in the cells. Well, if one doesn’t mind sacrificing some of the essence one has gathered during a lifetime it is alright. But one must know and be conscious that it is not just a body part that is being transferred but a slice of consciousness as well.
