Brink of Nought

Eternity prepared to fade and seemed
A hue and imposition on the Void,
Space was the fluttering of a dream that sank
Before its ending into Nothing’s deeps.

The spirit that dies not and the Godhead’s self
Seemed myths projected from the Unknowable;
From It all sprang, in It is called to cease.

But what That was, no thought nor sight could tell.

Only a formless Form of self was left,
A tenuous ghost of something that had been,
The last experience of a lapsing wave
Before it sinks into a bourneless sea,—
As if it kept even on the brink of Nought
Its bare feeling of the ocean whence it came.

Why Torment Oneself and Suffer

July 7, 1914

Peace, peace upon all the earth….

Not the peace of an inconscient sleep or a self-satisfied inertia; not the peace of a self-forgetful ignorance and a dark, heavy indifference, but the peace of the omnipotent force, the peace of perfect communion, the peace of integral awakening, of the disappearance of all limitation and all darkness….

Why torment oneself and suffer, why this bitter struggle and painful revolt, why this vain violence, why this inconscient, heavy sleep? Awake without fear, appease your conflicts, silence your disputes, open your eyes and your hearts: the Force is there; it is there, divinely pure, luminous, powerful; it is there as a boundless love, a sovereign power, an indisputable reality, an unmixed peace, an uninterrupted beatitude, the Supreme Benediction; it is self-existence, the endless bliss of infinite knowledge… and it is something more which cannot yet be told, but which is already at work in the higher worlds beyond thought as the power of sovereign transfiguration, and also in the inconscient depths of Matter as the Irresistible Healer….

Listen, listen, O thou who wouldst know.

Look, thou who wouldst see, contemplate and live:

The Force is here.

Supramental Plasticity

One of the greatest victories of this ineffable humility of God will be the transformation of Matter which is apparently the most undivine. Supramental plasticity is an attribute of finally transformed Matter. The supramental body which has to be brought into being here has four main attributes: lightness, adaptability, plasticity and luminosity. When the physical body is thoroughly divinised, it will feel as if it were always walking on air, there will be no heaviness or tamas or unconsciousness in it. There will also be no end to its power of adaptability: in whatever conditions it is placed it will immediately be equal to the demands made upon it because its full consciousness will drive out all that inertia and incapacity which usually make Matter a drag on the Spirit. Supramental plasticity will enable it to stand the attack of every hostile force which strives to pierce it: it will present no dull resistance to the attack but will be, on the contrary, so pliant as to nullify the force by giving way to it to pass off. Thus it will suffer no harmful consequences and the most deadly attacks will leave it unscathed. Lastly, it will be turned into the stuff of light, each cell will radiate the supramental glory. Not only those who are developed enough to have their subtle sight open but the ordinary man too will be able to perceive this luminosity. It will be an evident fact to each and all, a permanent proof of the transformation which will convince even the most sceptical.

Songs of the Soul: December 24, 2024

Mother Divine, Maa, with the development of our being there increases in us the need for harmony, of beauty and sweetness and truth. But this very need for harmony becomes the cause of suffering as one sees, as a contrast, disorder, disharmony, distrust, pain, harshness and anger, ugliness all around. It is during this phase that some turn away from the earth regarding earthly life as an incorrigible error, a falsehood and a lie. Some become cynics while others turn towards a door of escape from the nightmare into a beatific, happy state beyond. Little do they realise that they themselves were once caught up in the same darkness and ugliness they despise. Their goodness is itself a precarious flower that has emerged like the orchid and the rose out of the mud and mire of earth nature. If they could change, then why not others. These then become beacons of hope and inspiration giving rise to kindness, compassion and love instead of condemnation and disdain.

Maa, let this supreme hope awaken in everyone. Let this compassion and kindness be born in everyone. Let mankind grow generous and noble hearted extending their hands and hearts beyond their little self of petty desires to help their brethren come out of the mire in which they once were.

May all find Peace and Light and Harmony and Love.

Feeling The Divine Presence

The Divine is within everyone but hidden behind a veil made of attachment, preferences and desires. Storms of passions and excitement reinforce the veil making it more and more difficult to feel this Presence.

Peace and Stillness make it easier to feel the Divine Presence. However usually the lower nature covers it up again as we get driven by the egoistic movements and desires. It is only with practice and persistence that the ego-self gets weaker and weaker and it becomes easier to feel the Divine within.

One of the powerful ways to do this is by the practice of niskama karma or desireless action, dedicated to the Divine. Another way is to detach from the ego-self, refuse to give in to the desires and contemplate upon the Divine Presence within. But the swiftest of all ways is an entire self-giving to the Divine and His work.

What is your take on menstrual restrictions for entering temples in Hindu tradition?

I am aware of the number of explanations especially related to energy transactions between man/woman and the kids, quite tortuous explanations in fact. It may apply in some specific temples or places because of the specific energy of certain deities. But such places, if at all are very few. To turn these things into a general rule does no good and in fact belittles the Divine by limiting His action and freedom that does not depend upon any external condition, in fact not even on internal states. Lord Rama spent 14 years in a forest along with Sita Mata. Both were Divine incarnations. Did they not see each other during certain phases of the cycle. So too there have been women gurus who did not restrict meeting devotees or giving darshan during certain days. And those women in the service of their Master, for example women who were in the service of the Mother did not take off on certain days because of the menstrual cycle. God in Sanatana Dharma is not so much a Rule-maker as He is Patita Pavan, whose touch purifies everything. What rules of pundits or books can bind Him who is forever free, what harm or anishta can come to someone who goes near the All-liberating Presence of the Divine. None of the core scriptures of Hinduism, the Upanishads, the Gita, even mainstream Tantra mentions these things. The emphasis is rather on inner purity. I am not saying that one should not follow these things. It is up to each one’s faith and understanding. But one should know that these outer restrictions belong to the infancy of the soul and not to its adulthood, they are peripheral and not central to the Hindu thought.
