Canto Three. The Glory and Fall of Life
An uneven broad ascent now lured his feet.
एक असम प्रशस्त आरोहण ने राजा के पगों को लुभाया।
Answering a greater Nature’s troubled call
He crossed the limits of embodied Mind
And entered wide obscure disputed fields
Where all was doubt and change and nothing sure,
A world of search and toil without repose.
एक महत्तर जग-प्रकृति की वेदनाभरी पुकार के प्रत्युत्तर में
वह देही मन-शक्ति की सीमाओं को उलांघ गया
और धूमिल विवादग्रस्त क्षेत्र के विस्तारों में प्रवेश करगया
जहां सब शंकित औ’ परिवर्तनशील था और कुछ भी निश्चित नहीं था,
यह शोध औ’ श्रम का एक जगत् है जो सदैव विक्षुब्ध रहता है।
As one who meets the face of the Unknown,
A questioner with none to give reply,
Attracted to a problem never solved,
Always uncertain of the ground he trod,
Always drawn on to an inconstant goal
He travelled through a land peopled by doubts
In shifting confines on a quaking base.
जैसे कोई अज्ञेय परम के एक पक्ष के सामने जा खड़ा हो गया हो,
एक प्रश्नकर्ता समान जहां उसे उत्तर देने वाला कोई न हो,
एक समस्या कीओर आकर्षित था जिसका समाधान कभी नहीं हो पाया,
वह जिस धरती पर चलता उसके प्रति सदैव अनिश्चित और अस्थिर रहा,
पर एक अस्थायी लक्ष्य कीओर वह सतत आकर्षित हो
एक ऐसे प्रदेश के मध्य पहुंच गया जो शंकाओं से भरपूर था
एक डगमगाते आधार पर खड़ा अस्थिर सीमाओं में कैद था।
In front he saw a boundary ever unreached
And thought himself at each step nearer now,—
A far retreating horizon of mirage.
सामने उसने एक सीमा देखी जो सदा पहुंच से परे थी
यद्यपि प्रत्येक कदम पर वह सोचता जैसे अब उसके समीप पहुंच रहा हो,-
पर यह एक दूर होते क्षितिज की मरीचिका थी।
A vagrancy was there that brooked no home,
A journey of countless paths without a close.
एक स्वेच्छाचारिता वहां उपस्थित थी जो किसी स्थायी आवास को सह नहीं पाती,
अगणित पथों की एक यात्रा थी जिसका कहीं कोई अन्त नहीं था।
Nothing he found to satisfy his heart;
A tireless wandering sought and could not cease.
उसके हृदय को सन्तुष्ट कर सके ऐसा उसे कुछ न मिला;
एक अथक खोज की भटकन थी जिसका कोई विराम न था।
There life is the manifest incalculable,
A movement of unquiet seas, a long
And venturement leap of spirit into Space,
A vexed disturbance in the eternal Calm,
An impulse and passion of the Infinite.
वहां प्राण असंख्य रूपों में व्यक्त होता,
अशान्त सागरों की एक गति है, एक दीर्घ
और दुःसाहसी छलांग है जीव की अन्तराकाश में,
शाश्वत परम-प्रशान्तता में यह एक विक्षुब्ध व्याकुलता है,
चिरन्तनता का एक आवेग औ’ भावावेश है।
Assuming whatever shape her fancy wills,
Escaped from the restraint of settled forms
She has left the safety of the tried and known.
यहां प्राण-शक्ति अपने इच्छित मनमाने रूपों को धारण कर लेती,
निश्चित आकारों के नियन्त्रण से बच निकलकर
इसने परीक्षित और परिचित की सुरक्षा को त्याग दिया है।
Unshepherded by the fear that walks through Time,
Undaunted by Fate that dogs and Chance that springs,
She accepts disaster as a common risk;[116]
Careless of suffering, heedless of sin and fall,
She wrestles with danger and discovery
In the unexplored expanses of the Soul.
त्रिकालों के मध्य विचरण करने वाले भय से यह अप्रभावित है,
पीछे लगी दैवी-नियति से और हठात् वार करती दुर्घटना से निर्भय है,
क्योंकि वह विपत्ति को एक साधारण जोखिम सम स्वीकारती है;
दुःख-यातना के प्रति असावधान है, पाप औ’ पतन की चिंता नहीं है,
वह संकट के साथ जूझती है और आत्मपुरुष के
अशोधित विस्तारों में अन्वेषण करती है।
To be seemed only a long experiment,
The hazard of a seeking ignorant Force
That tries all truths and, finding none supreme,
Moves on unsatisfied, unsure of its end.
यह अस्तित्व एक दीर्घ परीक्षण मात्र ही जैसा दिखता है,
एक शोधकर्त्री अज्ञ महा-ऊर्जा का यह जोखिम भरा कार्य है
जो सकल सत्यों पर कार्य करती है और, जब एक को भी सर्वोच्च नहीं पाती,
तो अपने लक्ष्य के प्रति शंका से भर, असन्तुष्ट हो आगे बढ़ जाती है।
As saw some inner mind, so life was shaped:
From thought to thought she passed, from phase to phase,
Tortured by her own powers or proud and blest,
Now master of herself, now toy and slave.
किसी अन्तर-मन ने जैसा देखा, प्राण शक्ति वही रूप धर लेती है:
विचार से विचार तक, एक स्थिति से दूसरी स्थिति में से वह गुजरती है,
अपनी शक्तियों द्वारा पीड़ित, कभी गर्वीली औ’ कभी पूजित,
कभी अपनी ही स्वामिनी, कभी खिलौना और दासी।
A huge inconsequence was her action’s law,
As if all possibility must be drained
And anguish and bliss were pastimes of the heart.
एक विशाल असंगति उसके कर्मों का विधान थी,
जैसे कि समस्त सम्भावनाओं को सुखा देना चाहती हो
और यातना और सुख तो जैसे उसके हृदय को बहलाने के साधन हों।
In a gallop of thunder-hooved vicissitudes
She swept through the race-fields of Circumstance,
Or, swaying, she tossed between her heights and deeps,
Uplifted or broken on Time’s incessant wheel.
उतार-चढा़वों की तूफानी-टापों की गरजन के मध्य
वह घोर परिस्थितियों की दौड़ के मैदानों से आंधी समान निकल जाती है,
अथवा अपनी उच्चताओं औ’ गहराइयों के बीच टकराती, झूलती है,
युगों के अविराम काल चक्र पर ऊपर उठ आती है या टूट जाती है।
Amid a tedious crawl of drab desires
She writhed, a worm mid worms in Nature’s mud,
Then, Titan-statured, took all earth for food,
Ambitioned the seas for robe, for crown the stars
And shouting strode from peak to giant peak,
Clamouring for worlds to conquer and to rule.
रसहीन कामनाओं की एक कठिन घिसटन के मध्य
जड़-प्रकृति के कीचड़ में कीड़ों के मध्य कीटबनी वह रेंगती बिलबिलाती है,
और कभी दानवी आकार धर, सकल पृथ्वी को खाद्य सम भक्षण करती है,
सागरों का वस्त्र सम, तारों का किरीट धारण करने की उच्चाकांक्षा करती है
और गर्जन करती लहरों के घोर शिखर पार करती चली जाती है,
लोकों को पराजित कर शासन करने के अधिकार के लिए चिंघाड़ती है।
Then wantonly enamoured of Sorrow’s face,
She plunged into the anguish of the depths
And, wallowing, clung to her own misery.
फिर हठात्, घोर-कष्ट के मुख पर अकारण मोहित हो
उसने स्वयं को शोक के गर्तों में डुबो दिया है
और, उसी में निमग्न, अपनी निजी वेदना से चिपक गयी है।
In dolorous converse with her squandered self
She wrote the account of all that she had lost,
Or sat with grief as with an ancient friend.
उदास नैराश्य भरा संलाप अपनी बिखरी आत्म-सत्ता के साथ कर
उसने जो सब खोया था उसका हिसाब लिख डाला,
या दुःख को पकड़ ऐसी बैठी मानों किसी पुरातन सुहृद् का साथ हो।
A romp of violent raptures soon was spent,
Or she lingered tied to an inadequate joy
Missing the turns of fate, missing life’s goal.
उग्र सुखों की धमाचौकड़ी शीघ्र समाप्त हो गयी थी,
या वह एक अपर्याप्त सुख से बंधी चिपकी थी
नियति के मोड़ोंको पीछे छोड़कर, उसने जीवन का लक्ष्य खो दिया था।
A scene was planned for all her numberless moods
Where each could be the law and way of life,
But none could offer a pure felicity;[117]
Only a flickering zest they left behind
Or the fierce lust that brings a dead fatigue.
उसके समस्त असंख्य मनोभावों के लिए एक द़ृश्य की योजना हो चुकी है
जहां पर प्रत्येक मनोभाव जीवन का विधान और जीवन की यात्रा बन सकता है,
किन्तु कोई भी विशुद्ध आनन्दानुभूति नहीं दे सकता है;
केवल एक टिमटिमाता हर्ष वे अपने पीछे छोड़ जाते हैं
अथवा एक घोर लिप्सा को, जो एक मरणांतक क्लांति साथ ले आती है।
Amid her swift untold variety
Something remained dissatisfied ever the same
And in the new saw only a face of the old,
For every hour repeated all the rest
And every change prolonged the same unease.
उसकी तीव्रगामी अनकही विविधताओं के मध्य भी
कुछ है जो सदैव असन्तुष्ट और एक समान समरस बना रहता है
और इस नवीनता में भी केवल वही पुराना मुख दिखता है,
क्योंकि प्रत्येक घंटा वही सब दोहराये जाता है
और प्रत्येक परिवर्तन उसी अशान्ति को और बढ़ा जाता है।
A spirit of her self and aim unsure,
Tired soon of too much joy and happiness,
She needs the spur of pleasure and of pain
And the native taste of suffering and unrest:
She strains for an end that never can she win.
एक जीव सत्ता जो स्वयं के औ’ अपने लक्ष्य के विषय में अनिश्चित है,
वह हर्ष और सुख के अतिरेक से शीघ्र थक जाती है,
उसे सुख औ’ पीड़ा दोनों के अंकुश की आवश्यकता होती है
और वह यातना एवं अशान्ति का अपना स्वाभाविक रस चाहती है:
उस लक्ष्य के लिए प्रयत्न करती है जिसे वह कभी जीत नहीं सकती है।
A perverse savour haunts her thirsting lips:
For the grief she weeps which came from her own choice,
For the pleasure yearns that racked with wounds her breast;
Aspiring to heaven she turns her steps towards hell.
उसके तृषित अधरों पर एक विकृत स्वाद लग चुका है:
वह उस दुख से रोती है जो उसने स्वयं चुनकर अपनाया है,
उस सुख के लिए तरसती है जिसने उसकी छाती को घावों से भर दिया है;
स्वर्ग की अभीप्सा करते हुए अपने कदमों को नरक कीओर बढ़ा देती है।
Chance she has chosen and danger for playfellows;
Fate’s dreadful swing she has taken for cradle and seat.
उसने दैवयोग और खतरे को साथी खिलाड़ियों समान चुना है;
भाग्य के भयंकर झूले को उसने पालना औ’ आसन बनाया है।
Yet pure and bright from the Timeless was her birth,
A lost world-rapture lingers in her eyes,
Her moods are faces of the Infinite:
Beauty and happiness are her native right,
And endless bliss is her eternal home.
तथापि वह अकालशिव से पूर्ण विशुद्ध औ’ उज्जवल जन्मी थी,
अभी भी उसके नयनों में एक विस्मृत-लोक का आनन्द छिपा है,
उसके मनोभाव चिरन्तन की मुखाकृतियां हैं:
सौन्दर्य और प्रसन्नता उसका जन्मजात अधिकार है,
और अनन्त आनन्द-लोक ही उसका शाश्वत धाम है।
This now revealed its antique face of joy,
A sudden disclosure to the heart of grief
Tempting it to endure and long and hope.
इस प्राणशक्ति ने अब अपना हर्षित आदि रूप प्रकटाया,
शोक के मर्मस्थल का यह एक आकस्मिक उद़्घाटन था
जिसने उसे सहने और आकांक्षा एवं आशा के लिए लालायित किया।
Even in changing worlds bereft of peace,
In an air racked with sorrow and with fear
And while his feet trod on a soil unsafe,
He saw the image of a happier state.
इन बदलते लोकों में भी जो शान्ति से हीन थे,
यहां का वायुमण्डल तक दुःख औ’ भय से आक्रांत था
और योगी के चरणों के नीचे का धरातल तक असुरक्षित था,
पर वहां भी उसने एक सुखतर अवस्था की प्रसन्न छवि देखी।
In an architecture of hieratic Space
Circling and mounting towards creation’s tops,
At a blue height which never was too high
For warm communion between body and soul,
As far as heaven, as near as thought and hope,[118]
Glimmered the kingdom of a griefless life.
आध्यात्मिक आत्माकाश की एक संरचना में
वह परिक्रमा करती सृष्टि के शिखरों कीओर चढ़ रही थी,
एक सुनील उच्चता कीओर जा रही थी जो कभी भी इतनी ऊंची नहीं थी
कि देह और आत्म-सत्ता के मध्य प्रेमालाप न हो सके
स्वर्ग सम दूर होकर भी यह विचार औ’ आशा सम समीप थी,
अब एक सन्तापहीन प्राण जीवन का साम्राज्य वहां झिलमिलाया।
Above him in a new celestial vault
Other than the heavens beheld by mortal eyes,
As on a fretted ceiling of the gods,
An archipelago of laughter and fire,
Swam stars apart in a rippled sea of sky.
योगी के ऊर्ध्व में एक नवीन दिव्य-नभ के अन्तर कक्ष में
अपने नश्वर नयनों से हम जिन स्वर्गों को निहारते हैं उनसे भिन्न लोक में,
मानों देवताओं की एक नक्काशी की हुई छत पर
हास्य और अग्नि के द्वीप ऐसे तैर रहे थे,
जैसे आकाश-सागर की उर्मियों में सितारे पृथक् पृथक् तैरते हों।
Towered spirals, magic rings of vivid hue
And gleaming spheres of strange felicity
Floated through distance like a symbol world.
ऊंचे सर्पिल शिखर, उज्ज्वल रंगों के जादुई घेरे
औ’ अलौकिक सुख के झिलमिलाते उन्नत कुण्डलित आकार हैं
जो सुदूर उस नभ में एक प्रतीक लोक समान प्रवाहित हैं।
On the trouble and the toil they could not share,
On the unhappiness they could not aid,
Impervious to life’s suffering, struggle, grief,
Untarnished by its anger, gloom and hate,
Unmoved, untouched, looked down great visioned planes
Blissful for ever in their timeless right.
जीवन के कष्ट और कठोर श्रम में वे भाग नहीं लेते,
इसके दुःखों में कोई सहायता नहीं कर सकते,
इसके भोग, संघर्ष और सन्ताप में उदासीन बन रहते,
इसके क्रोध, उदासी और घृणा से अविकारी रहते हैं,
वे अचल, अस्पर्श्य, महान् दूरदर्शी स्तर नीचे अवलोकते
पर अपने कालातीत अधिकार में सदैव आत्मानन्द में स्थित हैं।
Absorbed in their own beauty and content,
Of their immortal gladness they live sure.
अपने आत्म-सौन्दर्य में निमग्न और परितृप्त
अपने अमर प्रसाद के प्रति निश्चिन्त निरापद वास करते हैं।
Apart in their self-glory plunged, remote
Burning they swam in a vague lucent haze,
An everlasting refuge of dream-light,
A nebula of the splendours of the gods
Made from the musings of eternity.
पृथक् अपने आत्म-गौरव में निमग्न, एकाकी
प्रज्वलित वे अस्पष्ट चमकीली धुंध में तैरते;
स्वप्निल ज्योति के एक चिर आश्रय स्थल,
देवों के प्रभामण्डल तारों की एक नीहारिका जैसे
वे शाश्वत चिन्तनों से रचित हुए हैं।
Almost unbelievable by human faith,
Hardly they seemed the stuff of things that are.
मानव-विश्वास द्वारा वे प्रायः अविश्वसनीय हैं,
क्योंकि उनका अस्तित्व द्रव्य से रचित जैसा नहीं दिखता।
As through a magic television’s glass
Outlined to some magnifying inner eye
They shone like images thrown from a far scene
Too high and glad for mortal lids to seize.
मानों एक मायावी दूरदर्शन के शीशे पर
किसी आवर्धित अन्तर नेत्र द्वारा आंके गये हों,
वे एक दूर से आते द़ृश्य की छवियों समान चमकते,
वे इतने उन्नत औ’ हर्षित थे कि नश्वर पलकों में समा नहीं पाते।
But near and real to the longing heart
And to the body’s passionate thought and sense
Are the hidden kingdoms of beatitude.
किन्तु लालायित हृदय के अति समीप औ’ यथार्थ हैं
और देह के भावात्मक विचार औ’ बोध के लिए
स्वर्गिक आह्लाद के गोपनीय साम्राज्य हैं।
In some close unattained realm which yet we feel,
Immune from the harsh clutch of Death and Time,
Escaping the search of sorrow and desire,
In bright enchanted safe peripheries
For ever wallowing in bliss they lie.[119]
किसी समीप के असिद्ध क्षेत्र में जिसकी अनुभूति हम कभी-कभीपा लेते हैं,
वे मृत्यु और काल के कठोर चंगुल से मुक्त,
शोक और कामना की खोज से परित्यक्त,
दीप्तिमय मोहक सुरक्षित परिसरों में
चिरकाल से सतत आनन्द में विलास करते हैं।
In dream and trance and muse before our eyes,
Across a subtle vision’s inner field,
Wide rapturous landscapes fleeting from the sight,
The figures of the perfect kingdom pass
And behind them leave a shining memory’s trail.
स्वप्न में, समाधि औ’ चिन्तन में हमारी आंखों के सामने,
अन्तर क्षेत्र के एक सूक्ष्म दर्शन को पार करके,
प्रशस्त सुखकारी द़ृश्य अन्तर्द़ृष्टि के सामने झलक दिखा उड़ जाते,
परिपूर्ण साम्राज्य के आकार स्रामने आ गुजर जाते
औ’ अपने पीछे एक ज्वलंत स्मृति के पदचिह्न छोड़ जाते।
Imagined scenes or great eternal worlds,
Dream-caught or sensed, they touch our hearts with their depths;
Unreal-seeming yet more real than life,
Happier than happiness, truer than things true
If dreams these were or captured images,
Dream’s truth made false earth’s vain realities.
काल्पनिक द़ृश्य हो या महान् शाश्वत लोक हों,
स्वप्न में देखे या अनुभव किये गये, वे निज गहनता से हमारे हृदयों को छू लेते हैं;
अवास्तविक दिखते हैं, फिर भी जीवन से अधिक यथार्थ हैं,
प्रसन्नता की अपेक्षा प्रसन्नतर हैं, सत्य वस्तुओं से अधिक सत्य हैं
यदि वे सत्य हैं या मानसिक कल्पना में देखी गयी छवियां हैं,
तो इस सपनाये सत्य ने पार्थिव गर्वीली यथार्थताओं को मिथ्या बना दिया है।
In a swift eternal moment fixed there live
Or ever recalled come back to longing eyes
Calm heavens of imperishable Light,
Illumined continents of violet peace,
Oceans and rivers of the mirth of God
And griefless countries under purple suns.
वहां ये एक सत्वर शाश्वत लक्ष्य की द़ृढ़ता में बसते हैं
या कभी याद करने पर लालायित नयनों में पुनः लौट आते हैं।
ये अविनाशी दिव्य-आलोक के प्रशान्त सुर-लोक हैं,
नील-लोहित शान्ति की दीप्ति से भरे महाद्वीप हैं,
प्रभु के हास्य के सागर औ’ सरिताएं हैं
और जामुनी रंगी सूर्यों के तले शोक-विहीन देश हैं।
This, once a star of bright remote idea
Or imagination’s comet trail of dream,
Took now a close shape of reality.
यह, कभी जो शुभ्र भाव का सुदूर एकाकी तारा
या स्वप्न की कल्पना का धूमकेतु पुच्छ था,
उसने अब योगी के समक्ष यथार्थ आकार धर लिया।
The gulf between dream-truth, earth-fact was crossed,
The wonder-worlds of life were dreams no more;
His vision made all they unveiled its own:
Their scenes, their happenings met his eyes and heart
And smote them with pure loveliness and bliss.
वह स्वप्न सत्य औ’ भौतिक वास्तविकता के मध्य की खाड़ी पार कर गया,
प्राण-जीवन के अद्भुत लोकों का अस्तित्व अब सपना नहीं रहा;
उन्होंने स्वयं को जितना व्यक्त किया वह सब नृप के अन्तर्दर्शन में अपना बन गया:
उनके द़ृश्य, उनकी घटनाएं उसके हृदय और नयनों को आ भेंटते
और उन्हें अपने विशुद्ध लालित्य और आह्लाद से आहत कर देते।
A breathless summit region drew his gaze
Whose boundaries jutted into a sky of Self
And dipped towards a strange ethereal base.
राजा की चितवन को एक विस्मयकारी शिखर प्रदेश ने आकर्षित किया
जिसकी सीमाएं स्वयम्भू के एक आकाश को भेद बाहर निकली हुई थीं
और एक विचित्र अलौकिक आधार की ओर झुकी थीं।
The quintessence glowed of Life’s supreme delight.
यह सार-तत्त्व परमा प्राण-शक्ति के सर्वोच्च आह्लाद से दीप्तिमान था।
On a spiritual and mysterious peak
Only a miracle’s high transfiguring line
Divided life from the formless Infinite
And sheltered Time against eternity.
एक आध्यात्मिक और रहस्यपूर्ण शिखर पर
केवल एक चमत्कार की उन्नत रुपान्तरकारी रेखा
निराकारी चिरन्तनता से जीवन को विभाजित करती
और त्रिकाल को शाश्वत कालातीत से सुरक्षित रखती।
Out of that formless stuff Time mints his shapes;
The Eternal’s quiet holds the cosmic act:[120]
The protean images of the World-Force
Have drawn the strength to be, the will to last
From a deep ocean of dynamic peace.
इसी निराकारी द्रव्य से महाकाल अपने आकारों का खनन करता है;
शाश्वत ब्रह्म की शान्ति इस वैश्विक क्रिया को धारण किये है:
विश्व की दिव्य-ऊर्जासे रचित इन विविध प्रतिबिम्बों ने
अपनी अभिव्यक्ति के लिए शक्ति औ’ जीवित रहने का संकल्प
प्राप्त किया है, ओजस्वी शान्ति के एक गहन सिन्धु से।
Inverting the Spirit’s apex towards life
She spends the plastic liberties of the One
To cast in acts the dreams of her caprice,
His wisdom’s call steadies her careless feet,
He props her dance upon a rigid base,
His timeless still immutability
Must standardise her creation’s miracle.
जीवात्मा की धुरी को जीवन की ओर मोड़कर
यह कैवल्य-ब्रह्म की नमनीयता को स्वच्छन्दता से खर्च करती है
जिससे यह अपने मायावी शिल्प को कर्मों और सपनों में ढाल सके,
आत्म-प्रज्ञा की चेतावनी उसके असावधान चरणों को स्थिर कर देती है,
वह प्राणशक्ति के नृत्य हित एक द़ृढ़ आधार का सहारा बन जाता है,
एक दिन उसकी अकाल स्थिर निर्विकारिता को
प्राणशक्ति के सृष्टि-चमत्कार को मानकीकृत करना होगा।
Out of the Void’s unseeing energies
Inventing the scene of a concrete universe,
By his thought she has fixed its paces, in its blind acts
She sees by flashes of his all-knowing Light.
इसने शून्य-ब्रह्म की अद़ृश्य ऊर्जाओंसे आविष्कार कर
एक स्थूल विश्व के इस द़ृश्य का संधान किया है
उसी के विचार के अनुसार इसने अपना गति-माप निश्चित किया है,
अपने अन्धे कर्मों में वह प्रभु के सर्वज्ञ दिव्य प्रकाश की कौंधन देखती है।
At her will the inscrutable Supermind leans down
To guide her force that feels but cannot know,
Its breadth of power controls her restless seas
And life obeys the governing Idea.
उसी के संकल्प पर अगम्य अतिमानस नीचे धरा पर झुक आता है,
उसका निर्देशन करता है, वह उसका अनुभव करती है पर जान नहीं सकती है,
उसकी ओजस्विनी श्वास प्राणशक्ति के अस्थिर सागरों को नियन्त्रित करती है
और जीवन अतिमानस के शासक विभाव का अनुसरण करता है।
At her will, led by a luminous Immanence
The hazardous experimenting Mind
Pushes its way through obscure possibles
Mid chance formations of an unknowing world.
प्राण शक्ति की मनोकामना पर, एक दीप्तिमय अन्तर्यामी द्वारा संचालित
दुःसाहसी शोधकर्ता मनोमय पुरुष अपनी राह बनाता
दुर्गम सम्भावनाओं को पीछे धकेलता प्रवेश करता है
इस अपरिचित जगत् के दैवयोग द्वारा रचित संघटनों के मध्य प्रकट हो जाता है।
Our human ignorance moves towards the Truth
That Nescience may become omniscient:
Transmuted instincts shape to divine thoughts,
Thoughts house infallible immortal sight
And Nature climbs towards God’s identity.
इस तरह हमारी मानवीय अज्ञता अमर सत्य कीओर संचालित है,
जिससे घोर निश्चेतना कभी सर्वचेतन बन सके:
सहजवृत्तियां रूपान्तरित हो दिव्य विचारों का आकार धर सकें,
विचारों में अमोघ अमर द़ृष्टि घर कर ले
और अपरा प्रकृति प्रभु की एकात्मता कीओर चढ़ जाये।
The Master of the worlds self-made her slave
Is the executor of her fantasies:
She has canalised the seas of omnipotence;
She has limited by her laws the Illimitable.
जगदीश्वर उसका दास स्वयंबन गया है,
वही उसकी कल्पनाओं का सम्पादनकर्ता है:
प्राणशक्ति ने सर्वशक्तिमान् के सागरों को धाराओं में बांध प्रवाहित किया है;
उसने असीम प्रभु को अपने विधान में बांध सीमित कर दिया है।
The Immortal bound himself to do her works;
He labours at the tasks her Ignorance sets,
Hidden in the cape of our mortality.
चिरन्तन ने उसकी कार्यपूर्ति हेतु बन्धन स्वीकारा है;
हमारी क्षरता की चादर में स्वयं को छिपा
वह अक्षर उसकी अविद्या में रचित कार्यों से जूझता रहता है।
The worlds, the forms her goddess fancy makes
Have lost their origin on unseen heights:[121]
Even severed, straying from their timeless source,
Even deformed, obscured, accursed and fallen,—
Since even fall has its perverted joy
And nothing she leaves out that serves delight,—
These too can to the peaks revert or here
Cut out the sentence of the spirit’s fall,
Recover their forfeited divinity.
इन जगतों, आकारों को प्राणशक्ति ने अपनी दिव्य कल्पना द्वारा रचा है
पर अपनी अगोचर उच्चताओं का आदि स्रोत खो दिया हैः
तब अपने अकाल उद़्गम से कटकर, भटकने पर भी,
विकृत, धूमिल, कलंकित और पतित होकर भी-
क्योंकि पतित-अवस्था का भी अपना विकृत सुख है
और जो सर्व सुखकारी है उसे वह कदापि तज नहीं सकती है,
क्योंकि ये भी कभी उलटकर शिखर कीओर उन्नत हो सकते हैं,
या इस पृथ्वी पर जीव के पतन की दण्ड अवधि घटा सकते हैं,
और अपनी खोयी हुई दिव्यता पुनः पा सकते हैं।
At once caught in an eternal vision’s sweep
He saw her pride and splendour of highborn zones
And her regions crouching in the nether deeps.
तुरन्त एक चिर अन्तर्दर्शन के बाढ़-प्रवाह में पकड़े गये
योगी ने प्राणशक्ति के गर्व औ’ आभिजात्य प्रदेशों की शोभा देखी
और पाताल के गर्तों में छिपे हुए उसके क्षेत्रों को भी देखा।
Above was a monarchy of unfallen self,
Beneath was the gloomy trance of the abyss,
An opposite pole or dim antipodes.
ऊर्ध्व में अपतित चैतन्य का एक साम्राज्य था,
अधोतल में गर्त की नैराश्यपूर्ण आत्मविस्मृति थी,
एक विरोधी ध्रुव या धूमिल विरोधाभास था।
There were vasts of the glory of life’s absolutes:
All laughed in a safe immortality
And an eternal childhood of the soul
Before darkness came and pain and grief were born
Where all could dare to be themselves and one
And Wisdom played in sinless innocence
With naked Freedom in Truth’s happy sun.
वहां जीवन की परिपूर्णताओं की महिमा के विस्तार थे:
सब एक सुरक्षित अमरता में हंसते थे
और चैत्यात्मा के एक शाश्वत शैशव में मुदित थे,
यह अंधकार और पीड़ा और शोक के उत्पन्न होने से पहले का युग था
जहां पर सब अपने स्व-तत्त्व में रहने का साहस रखते
और प्रज्ञा निष्पाप के भोलेपन में
नग्न आत्म-स्वाधीनता के साथ शाश्वत सत्य की सुखद धूप में क्रीड़ा करते।
There were worlds of her laughter and dreadful irony,
There were fields of her taste of toil and strife and tears;
Her head lay on the breast of amorous Death,
Sleep imitated awhile extinction’s peace.
वहां प्राण के हास्योल्लास और भीषण विडम्बना के लोक थे,
उसके कठिन परिश्रम औ’ संघर्ष एवं अश्रुओं के नमकीन स्वाद के क्षेत्र थे;
उसका शीश प्रणयी यमराज के वक्ष पर धरा है,
कुछ काल के लिए नींद प्रलय की शान्ति को प्रतिबिम्बित करती है।
The light of God she has parted from his dark
To test the savour of bare opposites.
उसने प्रभु की दिव्य ज्योति को उसकी कालिमा से पृथक् कर दिया है
जिससे नग्न विरोधाभासों के स्वाद को वह पा सके।
Here mingling in man’s heart their tones and hues
Have woven his being’s mutable design,
His life a forward-rippling stream in Time,
His nature’s constant fixed mobility,
His soul a moving picture’s changeful film,
His cosmos-chaos of personality.
यहां मानव के हृदय में उनके स्वरों औ’ रंगों का मिश्रण कर
उसकी सत्ता का विकारशील नमूना बुन डाला है,
युगान्तर त्रिकाल में मानव जीवन प्रगति करती कलकल बहती धारा है,
उसके स्वभाव की सतत अचल गतिशीलता में,
उसका जीव एक चलचित्र की बदलती तस्वीर है,
मानव का व्यक्तित्व ब्रह्माण्डीय अव्यवस्था को दर्शाता है।
The grand creatrix with her cryptic touch
Has turned to pathos and power being’s self-dream,
Made a passion-play of its fathomless mystery.[122]
वह महत्ती सृष्टि की रचनाकर्त्री अपनी माया के स्पर्श द्वारा
सत्ता के आत्म-स्वप्न को करुणा और अधिकार की खींचतान में बदलकर,
अपने अगाध जीवन-रहस्य को एक आवेशपूर्ण भोग-रोग की नाटिका बना दिया है।
But here were worlds lifted half-way to heaven.
किन्तु यहां स्वर्ग कीओर आधी ऊंचाई तक उन्नत संसार भी थे।
The Veil was there but not the Shadowy Wall;
In forms not too remote from human grasp
Some passion of the inviolate purity
Broke through, a ray of the original Bliss.
उन पर अलौकिक पर्दा अवश्य पड़ाथा किन्तु अज्ञान की काली छाया की दीवार नहीं थी;
मानवीय पहुंच की पकड़ में आ सकें ऐसी आकृतियों के अन्तर में
अक्षत शुचिता के कुछ भावावेश प्रवेश पा गये थे,
यह आदि परमानन्द की एक किरण थी।
Heaven’s joys might have been earth’s if earth were pure.
यह पृथ्वी पावन होती तो स्वर्ग के सुख उसके हो सकते थे।
There could have reached our divinised sense and heart
Some natural felicity’s bright extreme,
Some thrill of supernature’s absolutes:
All strengths could laugh and sport on earth’s hard roads
And never feel her cruel edge of pain,
All love could play and nowhere Nature’s shame.
तब यहां हमारे दिव्य बोध और ह्रदय तक पहुंच सकते थे
किसी नैसर्गिक सहज देवानन्द की उज्ज्वल चरमताएं,
तथा पराप्रकृति की परिपूर्णताओं की कुछ पुलकनें होतीं;
सकलशक्तियां धरा के कठोर मार्गों पर हंसतीं और खेलतीं
और पीड़ा की क्रूर धार का अनुभव नहीं पातीं,
सम्पूर्ण प्रेम खुल खेलता और कहीं पर भी सकल प्रकृति में लज्जित न होता।
But she has stabled her dreams in Matter’s courts
And still her doors are barred to things supreme.
किन्तु प्राण ने अपने सपनों को आदि जड़तत्त्व के अहातों में बांध दिया है
और सर्वोच्च वस्तुओं के लिए जिसके द्वार अभी तक बन्द हैं।
These worlds could feel God’s breath visiting their tops;
Some glimmer of the Transcendent’s hem was there.
इन लोकों के शिखरों पर भागवत श्वास के आगमन की अनुभूति पा सकते हैं;
परात्पर-दिव्यता की झालर की कुछ झलकें वहां मिल जाती हैं।
Across the white aeonic silences
Immortal figures of embodied joy
Traversed wide spaces near to eternity’s sleep.
Pure mystic voices in beatitude’s hush
Appealed to Love’s immaculate sweetnesses,
Calling his honeyed touch to thrill the worlds,
His blissful hands to seize on Nature’s limbs,
His sweet intolerant might of union
To take all beings into his saviour arms,
Drawing to his pity the rebel and the waif
To force on them the happiness they refuse.
श्वेत युगान्तरीय चिर नीरवताओं के उस पार से
देहधारी आनन्द के अमर आकार बांकी चाल चलते
चिरन्तन की निद्रा के समीपवर्ती प्रशस्त अम्बरों को पार कर जाते हैं
अलौकिक आह्लाद के मौन में विशुद्ध रहस्यमयी वाणियां
प्रेम-देवता की अमल माधुरी से भर अर्चना करतीं,
इन लोकों को पुलकित करने को उसके मधु-स्पर्श का आवाहन करतीं,
अपने सुखदायी करों से विश्व-प्रकृति के अंगों को धर लेने की,
उसकी मधुर अधीर संयोजिका शक्ति से निवेदन करती हैं
सब प्राणियों को अपनी बांहों की सुरक्षा में ले लेने,
अपनी करुणा के घेरे में विद्रोही और पातकी नीच को खींच लेने
और जिस प्रसन्नता का वे निषेध करते हैं उससे उन्हें बरबस भर देने को।
A chant hymeneal to the unseen Divine,
A flaming rhapsody of white desire
Lured an immortal music into the heart
And woke the slumbering ear of ecstasy.
उस अगोचर परम देव के प्रति एक स्तुति वंदन उठा,
यह विशुद्ध कामना का एक ज्वलन्त संगीत था
जिसने हृदय को एक अमर गान से लुभाया
और सोये श्रवण-बोध में आनन्द-रस जगा दिया।
A purer, fierier sense had there its home,
A burning urge no earthly limbs can hold.
One drew a large unburdened spacious breath
And the heart sped from beat to rapturous beat.
एक शुचितर उग्रतर संवेदन का वहां धाम था,
एक ज्वलन्त लालसा जिसे कोई पार्थिव अंग धर नहीं सका था
वहां सत्ता एक विशाल भारहीन विशाल श्वास खींचती
और ह्रदय पल पल आह्लादपूर्ण धड़कनों से स्पन्दित हो धड़कता।
The voice of time sang of the Immortal’s joy;[123]
An inspiration and a lyric cry,
The moments came with ecstasy on their wings;
Beauty unimaginable moved heaven-bare
Absolved from boundaries in the vasts of dream;
The cry of the Birds of Wonder called from the skies
To the deathless people of the shores of Light.
काल की वाचा अमर परमानन्द का गान गाती;
एक प्रेरणा और काव्यमय पुकार आती,
यहां की घड़ियां अपने पंखों पर भाव-समाधि वहन कर लातीं;
कल्पनातीत सुषमा स्वर्गिक यथार्थ अनावृत में विचरती
स्वप्न के विस्तारों की सीमाओं से मुक्त हो विहार करती;
अन्तरिक्ष से दिव्य चमत्कारी विहंगों की पुकार सुनायी देती
जो पुण्य-प्रकाश के तटों पर बसी अमर-विभूतियों को पुकारती।
Creation leaped straight from the hands of God;
Marvel and rapture wandered in the ways.
यह सृष्टि सीधी विधाता के हाथों से छिटक आ पड़ीथी;
इसके मार्गों में चमत्कार और आह्लाद भटकते घूमते।
Only to be was a supreme delight,
Life was a happy laughter of the soul
And Joy was king with Love for minister.
यहां मात्र अस्तित्व में आना ही सर्वोत्तम सुख था
अन्तरात्मा के लिए जीवन एक मोदभरा हास्य था
और आत्मानन्द यहां नृपति और दिव्य-प्रेम उसका मन्त्री था।
The spirit’s luminousness was bodied there.
आत्म-सत्ता की दीप्ति ने यहां देह धारण कर ली थी।
Life’s contraries were lovers or natural friends
And her extremes keen edges of harmony:
Indulgence with a tender purity came
And nursed the god on her maternal breast:
There none was weak, so falsehood could not live;
Ignorance was a thin shade protecting light,
Imagination the free-will of Truth,
Pleasure a candidate for heaven’s fire;
The intellect was Beauty’s worshipper,
Strength was the slave of calm spiritual law,
Power laid its head upon the breasts of Bliss.
जीवन की विषमताएं यहां प्रणयी या सहज सखियां थीं
जीवन की चरमताएं सुसामंजस्य की तीक्ष्ण धारें थीं;
यहां एक कोमल विशुद्धता अति दुलार लेकर आती
और अपने ममताभरे स्तन से देवता को पोषित करती:
यहां कोई बलहीन न था, अतः मिथ्यात्व पनप नहीं सकता था;
प्रखर प्रकाश से अज्ञान एक महीन छतरी सम सुरक्षा देता,
यहां कल्पनाएं अमर सत्य की मुक्त कामना थीं
प्रसन्नता देव-लोक की अग्नि हित एक प्रत्याशी थी;
बौद्धिकता दिव्य-सौन्दर्य की पुजारिन थी,
प्राण-शक्ति एक शान्त आत्मिक विधान की दासी थी,
अधिकार बल का शीश परमानन्द के वक्ष पर टिका था।
There were summit glories inconceivable,
Autonomies of wisdom’s still self-rule
And high dependencies of her virgin sun,
Illumined theocracies of the seeing soul
Throned in the power of the Transcendent’s ray.
वहां पर कल्पनातीत महिमाओं के उच्च शिखर थे,
प्रज्ञा के शान्त स्थिर आत्म-शासित स्वायत्त राज्य थे
और उसकी अक्षत धूप के श्रेष्ठ उप-राज्य थे,
सर्वद्रष्टा चैत्य-आत्मा के प्रकाशमान धर्म-मण्डल थे
जो परात्पर की ज्योति-किरण की दैवीशक्ति में स्थापित थे।
A vision of grandeurs, a dream of magnitudes
In sun-bright kingdoms moved with regal gait:
Assemblies, crowded senates of the gods,
Life’s puissances reigned on seats of marble will,
High dominations and autocracies
And laurelled strengths and armed imperative mights.
श्रेष्ठ-भव्यताओं का एक अन्तर्दर्शन, महत्ताओं का एक सपना
सूर्य-प्रकाशित साम्राज्यों में राजसी गति से चलता:
देवताओं के प्रतिनिधियों से भरे, सभा भवन थे,
जीवन की उन्नत-देवशक्तियां द़ृढ़ संकल्प के आसनों से शासन करतीं,
उन्नत और एकछत्रता के उच्च साम्राज्य थे
और यशस्वी महाबली औ’ सुसज्जित अनिवार्य समर्थताएं थीं।
All objects there were great and beautiful,
All beings wore a royal stamp of power.[124]
वहां के सकल उपकरण महान् औ’ मनोहर थे,
सब सत्ताओं पर बल अधिकार की एक शाही छाप लगी थी।
There sat the oligarchies of natural Law,
Proud violent heads served one calm monarch brow:
All the soul’s postures donned divinity.
वहां पर प्राकृतिक दैवी-विधान के गुटतन्त्र विद्यमान थे,
गर्वीले, उग्र मुखिया जो केवल एक शान्त सम्राट् कीसेवा करते:
जीव की सकल मुद्राएं दिव्यता को धारण किये होतीं।
There met the ardent mutual intimacies
Of mastery’s joy and the joy of servitude
Imposed by Love on Love’s heart that obeys
And Love’s body held beneath a rapturous yoke.
वहां उत्कट गम्भीर घनिष्ठताएं एक दूसरे को भेंटतीं
ये प्रभुता के हर्षसुख की और सेवा के आनन्द की होतीं
वे दिव्य-प्रेम द्वारा सत्य-प्रेम के अनुगत हृदय पर आरोपित की गयी थीं
और विशुद्ध प्रेम की देह एक भाव-समाधि के आनन्द में मग्न थी।
All was a game of meeting kinglinesses.
समस्त श्रेष्ठताओं के मिलन की ही एक लीला थी।
For worship lifts the worshipper’s bowed strength
Close to the god’s pride and bliss his soul adores:
The ruler there is one with all he rules;
To him who serves with a free equal heart
Obedience is his princely training’s school,
His nobility’s coronet and privilege,
His faith is a high nature’s idiom,
His service a spiritual sovereignty.
क्योंकि आराधना आराधक की नमित शक्ति को ऊपर उठा देती है
अपने आत्मा के आराध्यदेव के गौरव और प्रेमानन्द को समीप ले आती हैः
वह भी ऐसा शासक है कि जिस पर शासन करता है उसके साथ एक हो जाता है;
जो भी मुक्त समत्वभावी ह्रदय से सेवा करता है उसके लिए
आज्ञापालन करना ही, उसके विद्यालय का राजसी अनुशासन है,
उसकी आभिजात्यता का शीर्ष-मुकुट और अधिकार है,
उसकी श्रद्धा एक उच्च-प्रकृति का मन्त्र है,
उसका सेवाभाव एक आध्यात्मिक प्रभु-सत्ता है।
There were realms where Knowledge joined creative Power
In her high home and made her all his own:
The grand Illuminate seized her gleaming limbs
And filled them with the passion of his ray
Till all her body was its transparent house
And all her soul a counterpart of his soul.
यहां ऐसे क्षेत्र हैं जहां आत्म-ज्ञान सर्जन की दैवीशक्ति से जुड़गया है
उसने अपने उच्च भवन में प्राणशक्ति को अपनी बना लिया है:
इस महान् ज्ञान-ज्योति ने प्राणशक्ति के दीप्तिमय अंगों को धर लिया
और उन्हें अपनी किरण के आवेश से भर दिया
जब तक उसकी सकल देह इसका पारदर्शी भवन न बन गयी
और उसकी अन्तरात्मा उसकी अपनी आत्मा की पूरक न हो गयी।
Apotheosised, transfigured by wisdom’s touch,
Her days became a luminous sacrifice;
An immortal moth in happy and endless fire,
She burned in his sweet intolerable blaze.
प्रज्ञा के स्पर्श द्वारा रूपान्तरित हो एवं देवत्व को प्राप्त कर,
उसके दिवसों ने एक ज्योतिर्मय यज्ञ का रूप धर लिया;
अब वह उसकी मधुर असहनीय ज्वाला में जलती
सुखदायी और अनन्त अग्नि की एक शाश्वत शलभ बन गयी थी।
A captive Life wedded her conqueror.
एक बंदिनी प्राण-शक्ति ने अपने विजेता वीर से विवाह कर लिया था।
In his wide sky she built her world anew;
She gave to mind’s calm pace the motor’s speed,
To thinking a need to live what the soul saw,
To living an impetus to know and see.
उसके विशाल आकाश में उसने अपना नया संसार रच लिया;
प्राण ने मानस की शान्त-चाल को तीव्र गति की ऊर्जा से भर दिया,
आत्म-दर्शन के अनुसार मनीषी को जीवन जीने की एक आवश्यकता प्रदान की,
जीवधारियों में जानने और देखने की एक प्रेरक शक्ति दी।
His splendour grasped her, her puissance to him clung;
She crowned the Idea a king in purple robes,
Put her magic serpent sceptre in Thought’s grip,
Made forms his inward vision’s rhythmic shapes
And her acts the living body of his will.[125]
मन की भव्यताओं ने उसे पकड़ लिया, प्राणशक्ति की चरमता मानस से लिपट गयी;
प्राणशक्ति ने विभाव को नील-लालरंगी वस्त्रों से भूषित एक नृपति बना दिया,
अपना जादुई सर्प-रूपी राजदण्ड उसने संकल्प को थमा दिया,
अपने आकारों में चित्त के अन्तर्दर्शन की लयबद्ध आकृतियों को ढाल दिया
और अपने कर्मों को चित्त के संकल्प की सजीव देह बना दिया।
A flaming thunder, a creator flash,
His victor Light rode on her deathless Force:
A centaur’s mighty gallop bore the god.
एक चमकती बिजली, सृष्टिकर्ता की कौंधन सम,
उसका विजेता विद्युती-आलोक प्राण की अमर महाशक्ति पर रथी सम सवार हो गया;
एक दिव्य-अश्व की शक्तिशाली टापें उस देव को वहन कर ले आयीं।
Life throned with mind, a double majesty.
प्राण और मन का एक संग सिंहासीन होना यह एक दोहरा आधिपत्य था।
Worlds were there of a happiness great and grave
And action tinged with dream, laughter with thought,
And passion there could wait for its desire
Until it heard the near approach of God.
वहां पर एक महान् और उदासीन प्रसन्नता के धाम भी थे
और कर्म पर स्वप्न का रंग चढ़ा था, हास्य विचार से मिश्रित था,
और वहां भावावेश अपनी कामनापूर्ति के लिए तब तक प्रतीक्षा कर सकता था
जब तक यह प्रभु आगमन की आहट निज कान से न सुन लेता।
Worlds were there of a childlike mirth and joy;
A carefree youthfulness of mind and heart
Found in the body a heavenly instrument;
It lit an aureate halo round desire
And freed the deified animal in the limbs
To divine gambols of love and beauty and bliss.
वहां के लोक एक बाल-समान आमोद औ’ हर्षोल्लास के थे;
मन और ह्रदय की एक निश्चिन्त मुक्त तरुणाई ने
इस देह के रूप में एक अलौकिक यन्त्र पा लिया था;
जिसने कामना के चहुं ओर एक प्रभामण्डल आलोकित कर दिया
और इस दिव्य-पशु के अंगों को बन्धन-मुक्त कर दिया
और उन्हें प्रेम, सौन्दर्य और आनन्द की दिव्य लीलाओं हित छोड़ दिया।
On a radiant soil that gazed at heaven’s smile
A swift life-impulse stinted not nor stopped:
It knew not how to tire; happy were its tears.
इस एक तेजस्विनी धरती पर जो स्वर्ग की स्मित कीओर अपलक ताकती
एक तीव्र प्राण-प्रेरणा जो मुक्त निष्कलंक है अबाध बहती;
यह थकना तो जानती नहीं थी, इसके अश्रु भी प्रसन्नता में बहते।
There work was play and play the only work,
The tasks of heaven a game of godlike might:
A celestial bacchanal for ever pure,
Unstayed by faintness as in mortal frames
Life was an eternity of rapture’s moods:
Age never came, care never lined the face.
वहां कर्म ही क्रीड़ा है और खेलना ही केवल कार्य है;
स्वर्ग का श्रम भी देव-तुल्य इस शक्ति के लिए एक खेल है:
यह पावन सतत पुनीत एक स्वर्गिक सोम-सुरा उत्सव है,
पृथ्वी के नश्वर आकारों समान यह अपक्षय के कारण अस्थायी नहीं है
यह जीवनी शक्ति हर्षोल्लास की भावनाओं में वहां अविनाशी है:
आयु कभी बढ़ती नहीं, चिन्ता की रेखाएं मुख को विकृत नहीं करतीं।
Imposing on the safety of the stars
A race and laughter of immortal strengths,
The nude God-children in their play-fields ran
Smiting the winds with splendour and with speed;
Of storm and sun they made companions,
Sported with the white mane of tossing seas,
Slew distance trampled to death under their wheels
And wrestled in the arenas of their force.
नक्षत्रों की सुरक्षा पर सब चिन्ताएं सौंपकर
अमरबलों एवं सामर्थ्यों की आपसी दौड़ और मोद में,
नग्न दिव्य-बालक अपने खेल के मैदानों में दौड़ते
अपनी शोभाओं और गति सेपवनों को आक्रान्त करते खेलते;
सूर्य और झंझावात को उन्होंने खेल का साथी बना लिया है,
और वे उफनते सागरों के श्वेत-फेनिल अयालों के साथ खेलते,
अपने गतिचक्रों तले दूरियों को कुचल मिटा देते हैं
और निज शक्ति के अखाड़ों में कुश्ती करते।
Imperious in their radiance like the suns
They kindled heaven with the glory of their limbs
Flung like a divine largesse to the world.
सूर्यों समान अपनी तेजस्विता में निरंकुश उन्होंने
अपने अंगों के प्रताप से स्वर्ग को प्रज्वलित कर दिया
और एक दिव्य दान सम इस संसार कीओर फेंक दिया।
A spell to force the heart to stark delight,
They carried the pride and mastery of their charm[126]
As if Life’s banner on the roads of Space.
एक सम्मोहक पाश ने योगी-हृदय को विशुद्ध निर्मल सुख के लिए बाध्य कर दिया,
वे अपने गौरव और अपनी मोहिनी की प्रभुता को ऐसे वहन करते
जैसे स्वर्ग के नभीय पथों पर प्राण-शक्ति की ध्वजा फहराते हों।
Ideas were luminous comrades of the soul;
Mind played with speech, cast javelins of thought,
But needed not these instruments’ toil to know;
Knowledge was Nature’s pastime like the rest.
दिव्य-विभाव अन्तरात्मा के तेजस्वी सहचर थे;
मन-शक्ति गिरा के साथ खेलती, विचार के भाले फेंकती,
किन्तु जानने के लिए उसे इन उपकरणों के प्रयास की आवश्यकता नहीं थी;
अन्य मनोरंजनों समान विज्ञान भी विश्व-प्रकृति का एक मनोरंजन था।
Investitured with the fresh heart’s bright ray,
An early God-instinct’s child inheritors,
Tenants of the perpetuity of Time
Still thrilling with the first creation’s bliss,
They steeped existence in their youth of soul.
अभिनव हृदय की उज्ज्वल रश्मिसे अभिषिक्त हो,
एक आदि-प्रभु की आरम्भिक प्रेरणा के ये बाल-उत्तराधिकारी,
त्रिकाल की अविराम चिरन्तनता में बसने वाले ये निवासी
अभी तक प्रथम सृष्टि के आनन्द से पुलकित थे,
अपनी आत्मा की किशोरावस्था में उन्होंने अस्तित्व को निमज्जित कर दिया था।
An exquisite and vehement tyranny,
The strong compulsion of their will to joy
Poured smiling streams of happiness through the world.
एक उत्कृष्ट और प्रचण्ड निरंकुशता ने
हर्ष के प्रति उनके संकल्प की तीव्रता ने
इस संसार के मध्य प्रसन्नता की स्मित धाराओं को बहा दिया।
There reigned a breath of high immune content,
A fortunate gait of days in tranquil air,
A flood of universal love and peace.
उस स्थल में उच्च निरापद सन्तोष की एक प्राणवायु का शासन था,
शान्तिपूर्ण परिवेश में दिवस एक सौभाग्यशाली गति से बीतते,
विश्व-प्रेम और शान्ति की बाढ़ में सब डूबे थे।
A sovereignty of tireless sweetness lived
Like a song of pleasure on the lips of Time.
अक्लान्त मधुरता की एक अधिष्ठात्री वहां रहती थी ऐसे,
महाकाल के अधरों पर एक मोदभरा गीत हो जैसे।
A large spontaneous order freed the will,
A sun-frank winging of the soul to bliss,
The breadth and greatness of the unfettered act
And the swift fire-heart’s golden liberty.
इच्छा को एक महान् तात्कालिक व्यवस्था ने विमुक्त कर दिया
अन्तरात्मा के पंखों को एक धूप की स्पष्टता में आनन्द कीओर खोल दिया,
बन्धन-हीन कर्म की महानता और विस्तार कीओर
और तात्कालिक अग्निल-अन्तर की स्वर्णिम स्वाधीनता कीओर उद़्घाटित कर दिया।
There was no falsehood of soul-severance,
There came no crookedness of thought or word
To rob creation of its native truth;
All was sincerity and natural force.
वहां आत्म-पृथक्ता का कोई मिथ्या-भाव नहीं था,
विचार या शब्द में कोई विकृति या विकार नहीं आता था
सृष्टि के अपने नैसर्गिक सत्य को लूटने को;
समस्त सहज सत्य था और स्वाभाविक ओज था।
There freedom was sole rule and highest law.
वहां स्वाधीनता का एकाकी शासन और सर्वोच्च विधान था।
In a happy series climbed or plunged these worlds:
In realms of curious beauty and surprise,
In fields of grandeur and of titan power,
Life played at ease with her immense desires.
ये लोक प्रसन्न श्रृंखलाओं में ऊपर चढ़ते या नीचे गिरते:
विचित्र सौन्दर्य औ’ चकित करते इन क्षेत्रों में,
विलक्षणता और विकट बल के इन प्रदेशों में,
प्राण अपनी विशाल कामनाओं के साथ सहज भाव से खेलता।
A thousand Edens she could build nor pause;
No bound was set to her greatness and to her grace
And to her heavenly variety.
अविराम भाव से वह सहस्र नन्दन-काननों की रचना कर सकता था;
उसकी महत्ताओं और उसकी शोभाओं के क्षेत्रों पर
और उसकी अलौकिक विविधताओं पर कोई सीमा बन्धन नहीं था।
Awake with a cry and stir of numberless souls,
Arisen from the breast of some deep Infinite,[127]
Smiling like a new-born child at love and hope,
In her nature housing the Immortal’s power,
In her bosom bearing the eternal Will,
No guide she needed but her luminous heart:
No fall debased the godhead of her steps,
No alien Night had come to blind her eyes.
यह जगती अनगिनत अन्तरात्माओं के आलोड़न औ’ एक पुकार के संग जागी,
किसी गहन नित्य के वक्ष से यह प्रकटी,
एक नवजात-शिशु तुल्य वह प्रेम और आशा से भर मुस्काती,
अपने स्वभाव में वह अमरत्व कीशक्ति धारण कर,
अपने वक्षस्थल में शाश्वत का परम-संकल्प वहन करती,
अपने तेजस्वी ह्रदय के सिवाय उसे अन्य किसी गुरु की आवश्यकता नहीं थी:
उस दिव्यांश के कदमों को किसी पतन ने दूषित नहीं किया था,
कोई परकीय कालरात्रि उसके नयनों को अन्धा करने नहीं आयीथी।
There was no use for grudging ring or fence;
Each act was a perfection and a joy.
किसी दुर्भावना के घेरे या सीमा की वहां कोई उपयोगिता नहीं थीः
प्रत्येक क्रिया में एक परिपूर्णता और प्रसन्नता भरी थी।
Abandoned to her rapid fancy’s moods
And the rich coloured riot of her mind,
Initiate of divine and mighty dreams,
Magician builder of unnumbered forms
Exploring the measures of the rhythms of God,
At will she wove her wizard wonder-dance,
A Dionysian goddess of delight,
A Bacchant of creative ecstasy.
निज उछलती कल्पनाओं की मनमौजी उमंगों के भरोसे
और अपने मन की वैभवशाली रंगीनियों पर उसे छोड. दिया गया था,
दिव्यता और सामर्थ्यशाली सपनों की वह दीक्षिता,
अगणित आकारों की मायावी निर्मात्री
प्रभु की कविताओं हित सुर-तालों का अनुसन्धान करती,
इच्छानुसार अपने जादुई विलक्षण-नृत्य के पदताल बुनती,
आह्लाद की एक रस-ज्ञाता देवी,
सर्जन के आनन्दोत्सव की एक आह्लादकारी सुधा थी।
This world of bliss he saw and felt its call,
But found no way to enter into its joy;
Across the conscious gulf there was no bridge.
योगी ने सुखानन्द की यह जगती देखी और इसके आवाहन का अनुभव पाया,
किन्तु इसके हर्षोल्लास में प्रवेश करने का कोई मार्ग नहीं पाया;
उस सचेत खाड़ी को पार करने को कोई सेतु नहीं मिला।
A darker air encircled still his soul
Tied to an image of unquiet life.
योगी की अन्तरात्मा को अभी तक एक निराशा की वायु ने घेर रखा था
वह अशान्त जीवन की एक छाया से बंधा था।
In spite of yearning mind and longing sense,
To a sad Thought by grey experience formed
And a vision dimmed by care and sorrow and sleep
All this seemed only a bright desirable dream
Conceived in a longing distance by the heart
Of one who walks in the shadow of earth-pain.
यद्यपि मन में कामना थी और बोध लालायित था,
किन्तु निराश अनुभव द्वारा रूपायित एक उदास आत्म-विचार को
और चिन्ता दुःख तथा निद्रा द्वारा धूमिल एक अन्तर्दर्शन को
यह जगत् केवल एक उज्जवल कमनीय वांछित सपना-सम दिखा
जिसे ह्रदय की एक लालसा ने सुदूर से देख अनुभव किया
उस व्यक्ति के हृदय ने जो पृथ्वी-पीड़ा की छाया में विचरता रहा था।
Although he once had felt the Eternal’s clasp,
Too near to suffering worlds his nature lived,
And where he stood were entrances of Night.
यद्यपि एक बार वह भी चिरन्तन प्रभु के आलिंगन का अनुभव पा चुका था,
किन्तु उसका स्वभाव शोक-पीड़ित जगतों के अति समीप था,
और जहां वह खड़ा था अन्ध-रात्रि का प्रवेशमार्गवहीं पर था।
Hardly, too close beset by the world’s care,
Can the dense mould in which we have been made
Return sheer joy to joy, pure light to light.
इस लोक की चिन्ता से हम इतने समीप तक घिरे हैं,
और जिस स्थूल ढांचे में हम ढाले गये हैं उसके कारण
विशुद्ध हर्ष का हर्ष में लौटना, निर्मल ज्योति का ज्योति से मिलना दुष्कर है।
For its tormented will to think and live
First to a mingled pain and pleasure woke [128]
And still it keeps the habit of its birth:
A dire duality is our way to be.
क्योंकि इसका त्रासदायी संकल्प पहले सोचने और जीवित रहने का है
वह सर्वप्रथम पीड़ा और आह्लाद के मिश्रण पर जागा था
और यह अभी तक अपने जन्मजात स्वभाव को बनाये है:
हमारे अस्तित्व की यही दारुण द्वंद्व वास्तविकता है।
In the crude beginnings of this mortal world
Life was not nor mind’s play nor heart’s desire.
इस अनित्य संसार के अनगढ़ प्रारम्भिक युग में
यहां जीवन अथवा मन का खेल और ह्रदय की कामना नहीं थी।
When earth was built in the unconscious Void
And nothing was save a material scene,
Identified with sea and sky and stone
Her young gods yearned for the release of souls
Asleep in objects, vague, inanimate.
जब इस अचित्-विराट् शून्य में पृथ्वी बनी थी
और तब एक जड़ता के द़ृश्य के सिवाय यहां कुछ भी नहीं था,
उसके सागर और अन्तरिक्ष और पाषाण के साथ एकात्म हो
उसके बालदेवों ने पदार्थों में अचेत अस्पष्ट सोयी
जीव-सत्ताओं की मुक्ति हित अभीप्सा की थी।
In that desolate grandeur, in that beauty bare,
In the deaf stillness, mid the unheeded sounds,
Heavy was the uncommunicated load
Of Godhead in a world that had no needs;
For none was there to feel or to receive.
उस वीरान भव्यता में, उस आवरणहीन नग्न सौन्दर्य में,
उस बधिर निश्चलता में, उन उपेक्षित ध्वनियों के मध्य,
उस अव्यक्त, मूक अभीप्सा का भार अति बोझिल था
जो एक अचेत संज्ञाहीन लोक में इस देवांश ने उठाया था;
क्योंकि यहां अभी तक कोई अनुभवकर्ता या ग्रहणकर्ता नहीं था।
This solid mass which brooked no throb of sense
Could not contain their vast creative urge:
Immersed no more in Matter’s harmony,
The Spirit lost its statuesque repose.
इस स्थूल-पिण्ड में बोध का कोई स्पन्दन नहीं जागा था
जो देवों के विस्तृत सर्जन के आवेग को धारण कर पाता:
यह प्राण-चेतना जड़तत्त्व की स्थूल सुरसंगति में और खोयी न रह सकी,
और उस दिव्यात्मा ने अपनी प्रतिमा-सम शान्ति खो दी।
In the uncaring trance it groped for sight,
Passioned for the movements of a conscious heart,
Famishing for speech and thought and joy and love,
In the dumb insensitive wheeling day and night
Hungered for the beat of yearning and response.
अब अपनी निश्चिन्त समाधि में इसने द़ृष्टि हित टटोलना आरम्भ कर दिया,
एक सचेत हृदय के आवेशपूर्ण संचालन की कामना की,
वह वाचा और विचार और हर्ष और प्रेम की भूखी थी,
इस मूढ़ भावनाहीन दिवस-रात्रि के गति चक्र में
वह प्रत्युत्तर और लालसा के स्पन्दन के लिए लालायित थी।
The poised inconscience shaken with a touch,
The intuitive silence trembling with a name,
They cried to Life to invade the senseless mould
And in brute forms awake divinity.
वह संतुलित अचित् जड़तत्त्व मात्र एक स्पर्श से हिल गया था,
उसके अन्तर्बोध की आत्म नीरवता एक नाम से कांप उठी थी,
उन्होंने उस अचित् पिण्ड पर आक्रमण करने को प्राणजीवन को पुकारा
और अनगढ़ आकृतियों में दिव्यता जाग्रत करने बुलाया।
A voice was heard on the mute rolling globe,
A murmur moaned in the unlistening Void.
तब इस मूक घूमते भूगोलक पर एक गिरा पड़ी सुनायी,
श्रवणहीन बधिर विराट् शून्य में से एक कराहने की ध्वनि गूंजी।
A being seemed to breathe where once was none:
Something pent up in dead insentient depths,
Denied conscious existence, lost to joy,
Turned as if one asleep since dateless time.
पहले जहां कोई नहीं था एक सत्ता श्वास लेती जान पड़ी:
मृत अवचेतन गर्त में से कुछ दबा-घुटा हुआ ऊपर उभर आया,
जिसे सचेत अस्तित्व निषिद्ध था, हर्ष विस्मृत कर चुका था,
उसने ऐसे करवट ली जैसे अनन्तकाल से कोई सो रहा हो।
Aware of its own buried reality,
Remembering its forgotten self and right,
It yearned to know, to aspire, to enjoy, to live.[129]
अब अपनी निजी दफनायी वास्तविकता के प्रति सचेत हो
अपनी विस्तृत सत्ता और अधिकार को पुनः स्मरण कर,
इसमें जिज्ञासा की, अभीप्सा की, हर्ष के जीवन की ललक जागी।
Life heard the call and left her native light.
दिव्य प्राणशक्ति ने उस आवाहन को सुन अपना स्वाभाविक ज्योति-धाम छोड़ दिया।
Overflowing from her bright magnificent plane
On the rigid coil and sprawl of mortal space,
Here too the gracious great-winged Angel poured
Her splendour and her sweetness and her bliss,
Hoping to fill a fair new world with joy.
अपने आलोकित भव्य स्तर से वह उमगती धारा
इस अनम्य कुण्डलित चक्र पर और इन नश्वर दिशाओं में बह निकली,
इस पृथ्वी पर भी उस महिमामयी महान् पंखी देवदूती ने उंडे़ल दीं
अपनी भव्य छटाएं और अपनी तीव्र गति एवं अपने सुखानन्द की धाराएं,
इस आशा में कि एक रम्य मनोहर नव जगत् को हर्ष से भर दे।
As comes a goddess to a mortal’s breast
And fills his days with her celestial clasp,
She stooped to make her home in transient shapes;
In Matter’s womb she cast the Immortal’s fire,
In the unfeeling Vast woke thought and hope,
Smote with her charm and beauty flesh and nerve
And forced delight on earth’s insensible frame.
ज्यों एक मानव के अन्तर में एक देवी अवतरित होती है
और उसके दिवसों को अपने अलौकिक आलिंगन में भर लेती है,
वैसे ही वह इन नश्वर आकृतियों में निज धाम बनाने झुक आयी;
जड़तत्त्व के गर्भ में अविनाशी की अग्नि आरोपित कर दी,
इस संज्ञाहीन अचित्-विराट् में विचार और आशा जाग्रत् कर दी,
अपनी मोहिनी और सौन्दर्य से मांस औ’ स्नायु-रचित देह को आहत कर
पृथ्वी के चेतनाहीन आकार में आह्लाद का बीजारोपण कर दिया।
Alive and clad with trees and herbs and flowers
Earth’s great brown body smiled towards the skies,
Azure replied to azure in the sea’s laugh;
New sentient creatures filled the unseen depths,
Life’s glory and swiftness ran in the beauty of beasts,
Man dared and thought and met with his soul the world.
धरती की मटमैली विशाल देह-लता, वृक्षों पुष्पोंऔर बूटियों से सज उठी
सजीव और जाग्रत् हो वह अन्तरिक्षों कीओर नयन उठा मुस्कुराने लगी,
नीलाकाश ने सागर के नील-हास्य द्वारा पृथ्वी को उत्तर दिया;
नये संवेदनशील प्राणियों ने उसकी अद़ृश्य गहराइयों को भर दिया;
प्राणशक्ति की महिमा और ओजपूर्ण वेग पशु-जगत् में सौन्दर्य बन दौड़ने लगा,
मानव में शौर्य औ’ मनन जागा और अपनी चैत्य सत्ता के साथ इस संसार से भेंटा।
But while the magic breath was on its way,
Before her gifts could reach our prisoned hearts,
A dark ambiguous Presence questioned all.
किन्तु जब यह अद्भुत प्राणश्वास अभी अपने लक्ष्य के मार्ग पर ही था
इसके पहले कि उसके वरदान हमारे बन्दी हृदयों तक पहुंच पाते,
एक काली अस्पष्ट शंकालु घोर उपस्थिति ने इस सकल पर प्रश्न-चिह्न लगा दिया।
The secret Will that robes itself with Night
And offers to spirit the ordeal of the flesh,
Imposed a mystic mask of death and pain.
वह रहस्यपूर्ण दैवी संकल्प स्वयं को तमस् की कालरात्रि में छिपा लेता है
और जीवकी देह को भाग-रोग की अग्निपरीक्षा भेंट कर
इसने मृत्यु और पीड़ा का एक गुह्य मुखौटा दिव्यता पर आरोपित कर दिया।
Interned now in the slow and suffering years
Sojourns the winged and wonderful wayfarer
And can no more recall her happier state,
But must obey the inert Inconscient’s law,
Insensible foundation of a world
In which blind limits are on beauty laid
And sorrow and joy as struggling comrades live.
अब वह इन शिथिल धीमेऔर यातनाभरे वर्षों की बन्दिनी बनी
इस गगन-विहारी अद्भुत पथिक के पास तनिक ठहरी
पर अपने आनन्द की दिव्यतर स्थिति की उसे याद न आयी;
किन्तु इस तामसिक घोर अचित् के विधान-पालन का आग्रह था,
यह एक संसार की संज्ञाहीन जड़ आधार-शिला बना दी गयीं
जिसमें सौन्दर्य के चहुं ओर अन्धी सीमाएं खींच दी गयीं
और दुःख और सुख कुश्ती लड़ते साथियों समान रहते हैं।
A dim and dreadful muteness fell on her:
Abolished was her subtle mighty spirit
And slain her boon of child-god happiness,
And all her glory into littleness turned[130]
And all her sweetness into a maimed desire.
एक धूमिल और भीषण नीरव मौन उस पर छाया थाः
उसकी सूक्ष्म सामर्थ्यशाली सत्य चेतना वहां से निष्कासित थी
और उसकी देव-शिशु समान प्रसन्नता का वरदान मर चुका था,
और उसकी सकल महिमा का प्रताप क्षुद्रताओं में परिणत हो गया
और उसका सम्पूर्ण माधुर्य एक अपंग कामना बन रह गया था।
To feed death with her works is here life’s doom.
अपने कर्मों द्वारा मृत्यु को पोषित करना यहां के जीवन का सर्वनाशी दुर्भाग्य हो गया।
So veiled was her immortality that she seemed,
Inflicting consciousness on unconscious things,
An episode in an eternal death,
A myth of being that must for ever cease.
उसकी अमरता अब इतनी आच्छादित थी कि वह ऐसी दिखती
जैसे अचेत पदार्थों पर एक चेतना बलात् आरोपित कर दी गयी हो
और एक शाश्वत मृत्यु की यह एक घटना-चक्र बन रह गयी हो,
सत्ता की एक ऐसी पुराणकथा जिसे सदा के लिए समाप्त करना होगा।
Such was the evil mystery of her change.[131]
इस प्राण-शक्ति के परिवर्तन का यही पापी रहस्य था।
