The Instrumental Personality, p. 542

Opening Remarks
Nature has created us as instruments for a certain purpose.

Nature’s craft
All else is Nature’s craft and this too hers.

All has been created by the ingenious craft of Nature including the field of operation of thoughts and feelings.

We are but instruments
Our tasks are given, we are but instruments;
Nothing is all our own that we create:
The Power that acts in us is not our force.

We are merely instruments and our task are given to us. There is nothing that we create and hence can call our own. Even the Power that acts in us is also not our own.

The genius
The genius too receives from some high fount
Concealed in a supernal secrecy
The work that gives him an immortal name.

The genius whose work gives him an immortal name too receives from some high source which is not known to him.

The laboratory of God
The word, the form, the charm, the glory and grace
Are missioned sparks from a stupendous Fire;
A sample from the laboratory of God
Of which he holds the patent upon earth,
Comes to him wrapped in golden coverings;
He listens for Inspiration’s postman knock
And takes delivery of the priceless gift
A little spoilt by the receiver mind
Or mixed with the manufacture of his brain;
When least defaced, then is it most divine.

The spoken and written word, the forms we build, the charm and glory and grace are sparks emerging from the mighty workings of the Divine Wisdom and Will. They are one of the many idea-forces that have been unleashed into creation and land upon earth which is the laboratory of God for working out His deep purpose. Here they arrive wearing beautiful forms of thought and speech with the stamp of Creator. The receiving instrument that man is has to open to the Inspiration and receive the priceless wisdom in its purity. But even as he receives it, the original inspiration gets somewhat distorted by the mind. Or it gets mixed up when the brain receives the signals and converts it into speech. When least defaced by the receiving instrument then it is expressed in the most divine way.

Dynamo for God’s work
Although his ego claims the world for its use,
Man is a dynamo for the cosmic work;
Nature does most in him, God the high rest:
Only his soul’s acceptance is his own.

Although the human ego claims everything for himself, yet he is simply a dynamo for the cosmic work. Nature does most of the preparation by creating the instrument and supplying the force. Man’s role is primarily to choose between the various forces trying to express and the acceptance given by his soul.

Closing Remarks
The whole machinery of nature, its workings and purpose as well as our limited yet important role of making the right choice has been revealed to us.
