Opening Remarks
Life indeed is a magician builder as Sri Aurobindo puts it later in this passage. There is no end to the varieties of forms and energies and powers it brings forth into creation. Its creations range from one extreme to another and climb right from the dark abysses to the kingdoms of Glory on the heights.
Fields of grandeur and titan power
In a happy series climbed or plunged these worlds:
In realms of curious beauty and surprise,
In fields of grandeur and of titan power,
Life played at ease with her immense desires.
Countless are these worlds built by the force of Life, expressing in multitudinous ways. These worlds climb to heavenly heights and lapse into dangerous abysses. From realms of beauty and wonder and the grandeur of the gods, life spreads into fields of titan power playing with its desire to build and to create.
A thousand Edens
A thousand Edens she could build nor pause;
No bound was set to her greatness and to her grace
And to her heavenly variety.
Driven by an irresistible urge to build, it labours without rest or care for time. As soon as one enterprise is over it jumps on to the next and even a thousand Edens and heavens cannot satisfy her creative thrust.
Housing the Immortal’s power
Awake with a cry and stir of numberless souls,
Arisen from the breast of some deep Infinite,
Smiling like a new-born child at love and hope,
In her nature housing the Immortal’s power,
In her bosom bearing the eternal Will,
No guide she needed but her luminous heart:
No fall debased the godhead of her steps,
No alien Night had come to blind her eyes.
Arisen from the breast of the Infinite, a power of the Immortal, led upon her paths by the eternal Will, Life seeks to create infinity, eternity and immortality on the basis of finite forms and perishable matter. Always she carries the God-light in her heart that guides her sure steps on this perilous adventure of the Unknown.
No ring or fence
There was no use for grudging ring or fence;
Each act was a perfection and a joy.
Vast and Limitless, its movements were driven by an urge towards perfection and joy.
Wizard wonder-dance
Abandoned to her rapid fancy’s moods
And the rich coloured riot of her mind,
Initiate of divine and mighty dreams,
Magician builder of unnumbered forms
Exploring the measures of the rhythms of God,
At will she wove her wizard wonder-dance,
A Dionysian goddess of delight,
A Bacchant of creative ecstasy.
There is no term or limit to her fancy’s moods and the creative impulsion, she is here to give shape and form to the dreams of the Divine. Her forces and energies engage in a wonder-dance of creation trying to capture the rhythms of the Eternal dancer. She is indeed the goddess of delight and creative ecstasy.
Closing remarks
In a summary way Sri Aurobindo reveals to us that Life is a power of the Eternal and the Infinite and has entered the fields of creation to build delight and immortality with transient finite things. Impossible though this task may seem, she is driven by the Eternal Will and carries the Light of the Divine in her vast bosom. This is the seed of certainty, the surety that one day life and the forms it builds and animates and inhabits will be divinized since her very origin is Divine.
