At the Feet of The Mother

The Seers and Sages, pp. 382-383

Opening Remarks
Another line of spiritual advance is the seer and the sage. This is what is revealed to us now.

Attuned to the universal Will
The seers attuned to the universal Will,
Content in Him who smiles behind earth’s forms,
Abode ungrieved by the insistent days.

The seers do not withdraw from the world. They live and act in the world as guided by the Divine Will operating in the universe. They lived their life content in Him who smiles behind earth’s forms. They sat free from grief as the days rolled by.

Young grave disciples
About them like green trees girdling a hill
Young grave disciples fashioned by their touch,
Trained to the simple act and conscious word,
Greatened within and grew to meet their heights.

Around these seers there gathered young disciples keen to learn and be moulded by their touch. Trained in the conscious act and speech they greatened within and grew towards the heights that the seers had attained.

Far-wandering seekers
Far-wandering seekers on the Eternal’s path
Brought to these quiet founts their spirit’s thirst
And spent the treasure of a silent hour
Bathed in the purity of the mild gaze
That, uninsistent, ruled them from its peace,
And by its influence found the ways of calm.

Seekers came wandering from far to these founts of knowledge and wisdom and spend time bathe in the purity of their sight that ruled them from the peace within and taught them silently by influence the ways of calm.

Heroic leaders
The Infants of the monarchy of the worlds,
The heroic leaders of a coming time,
King-children nurtured in that spacious air
Like lions gambolling in sky and sun
Received half-consciously their godlike stamp:
Formed in the type of the high thoughts they sang
They learned the wide magnificence of mood
That makes us comrades of the cosmic urge,
No longer chained to their small separate selves,
Plastic and firm beneath the eternal hand,
Met Nature with a bold and friendly clasp
And served in her the Power that shapes her works.

Princes and leaders of the future came to these seers to learn various forms of knowledge and receive the stamp of a godlike consciousness from these seer teachers. Their life was moulded along the thoughts of these seers. Here they learnt to enter the states that are like the great cosmic urges. No longer chained to their separate selves they were plastic to the Divine Will working in creation. They treated Nature with a wisdom grasping her energies and truths and served in her the Divine Power that shapes the worlds.

One-souled to all
One-souled to all and free from narrowing bonds,
Large like a continent of warm sunshine
In wide equality’s impartial joy,
These sages breathed for God’s delight in things.

These sages were One-souled to all and free from narrowing bonds in which we shut all our relationships. There consciousness was large like a continent of warm sunshine. Dwelling in the wide equality’s impartial joy they lived for God’s delight in everything.

Entries of the gods
Assisting the slow entries of the gods,
Sowing in young minds immortal thoughts they lived,
Taught the great Truth to which man’s race must rise
Or opened the gates of freedom to a few.

Assisting the slow entry of the godlike forces in men they sowed immortal thoughts in young minds and taught the great Truth to which man’s soul must rise. To a select few they opened the gates of freedom.

Comrades and vessels of the cosmic Force
Imparting to our struggling world the Light
They breathed like spirits from Time’s dull yoke released,
Comrades and vessels of the cosmic Force,
Using a natural mastery like the sun’s:
Their speech, their silence was a help to earth.

Sharing the Light they received with all, they were beings released from the mechanical rounds of life to which man is ordinarily too much yoked. Spontaneously instinct with truth their speech and silence both were a help to the earth.

Oneness was sovereign
A magic happiness flowed from their touch;
Oneness was sovereign in that sylvan peace,
The wild beast joined in friendship with its prey;
Persuading the hatred and the strife to cease
The love that flows from the one Mother’s breast
Healed with their hearts the hard and wounded world.

A magic happiness flowed from their touch. Their Ashrams were filled with the spirit of oneness and peace. The wild instincts were lost or subdued by the peace and friendship replaced hatred. Strife ceased in the love that flows from the one Mother’s breast and in that love the wounded life of man felt healed.

Closing Remarks
This is the true image of the Ashrams that once flourished in the soil of India.
