Stark Companionless Reality

A Vastness brooded free from sense of Space,
An Everlastingness cut off from Time;
A strange sublime inalterable Peace
Silent rejected from it world and soul.

A stark companionless Reality
Answered at last to his soul’s passionate search:
Passionless, wordless, absorbed in its fathomless hush,
Keeping the mystery none would ever pierce,
It brooded inscrutable and intangible
Facing him with its dumb tremendous calm.

It had no kinship with the universe:
There was no act, no movement in its Vast:
Life’s question met by its silence died on her lips,
The world’s effort ceased convicted of ignorance
Finding no sanction of supernal Light:
There was no mind there with its need to know,
There was no heart there with its need to love.

Dispenser of All Boons

July 8, 1914

O Divine Force, supreme Illuminator, hearken to our prayer, move not away from us, do not withdraw, help us to fight the good fight, make firm our strength for the struggle, give us the force to conquer!

O my sweet Master, Thou whom I adore without being able to know Thee, Thou who I am without being able to realise Thee, my entire conscious individuality prostrates itself before Thee and implores, in the name of the workers in their struggle, and of the earth in her agony, in the name of suffering humanity and of striving Nature; O my sweet Master, O marvellous Unknowable, O Dispenser of all boons, Thou who makest light spring forth in the darkness and strength to arise out of weakness, support our effort, guide our steps, lead us to victory.

Freedom from Karma

The bodily transformation will be the supreme spiritual rebirth—an utter casting away of all the ordinary past. For spiritual rebirth means the constant throwing away of our previous associations and circumstances and proceeding to live as if at each virgin moment we were starting life anew. It is to be free of what is called Karma, the stream of our past actions: in other words, a liberation from the bondage of Nature’s common activity of cause and effect. When this cutting away of the past is triumphantly accomplished in the consciousness, all those mistakes, blunders, errors and follies which, still vivid in our recollection, cling to us like leeches sucking our life-blood, drop away, leaving us most joyfully free. This freedom is not a mere matter of thought; it is the most solid, practical, material fact. We really are free, nothing binds us, nothing affects us, there is no obsession of responsibility. If we want to counteract, annul or outgrow our past, we cannot do it by mere repentance or similar things, we must forget that the untransformed past has ever been and enter into an enlightened state of consciousness which breaks loose from all moorings. To be reborn means to enter, first of all, into our psychic consciousness where we are one with the Divine and eternally free from the reactions of Karma. Without becoming aware of the psychic, it is not possible to do so; but once we are securely conscious of the true soul in us which is always surrendered to the Divine, all bondage ceases. Then incessantly life begins afresh, then the past no longer cleaves to us. To give you an idea of the final height of spiritual rebirth, I may say that there can be a constant experience of the whole universe actually disappearing at every instant and being at every instant newly created!

Songs of the Soul: December 25, 2024

Mother Divine, Maa, for Ages Thou hast toiled and suffered to make mankind awaken to the sweetness and fragrance of Thy Divine Love, to open the closed bud of human heart to Thy supreme power of transformation. Now that the hour of Thy Victory is near grant that all in us may be ready and collaborate in Thy Work and nothing in us wavers or deviates from the aim Thou hast placed before us.

Let Thy Glory be proclaimed and man’s eye open to Thy Truth and Light.

Let Thy Will be done in us and in all.

Let Thy Peace prevail over all agitation.

Let Thy Love win the Victory over all that resists and denies.

The Hidden Truth

Ordinarily what we call reality is what we can see, touch, hear, smell, taste, in other words what we can experience through the senses. Or else what we can grasp by the mind which is the sixth sense.

As we grow in consciousness, as we discover new possibilities and ranges of consciousness concealed within us, our everyday life and everyday objects assume a different meaning, and a new reality hidden behind their façade begins to reveal itself. It is only by a growth of consciousness that we can enter into these domains, encounter these truths as a living experience.

The mystics communicated this reality through stories, symbols, myths which are cryptic documents of these other orders of reality. They are a rare and unique method of preserving and revealing to the initiate hidden truths that are too sublime for our commonplace experience of life.

What is the difference between our inner being and the psychic being?

There are three layers to our being. The outer being is the outer personality which is largely a bundle of habits and mechanical or learnt responses and habitual pattern of thoughts and feelings that are born of sensory impacts and the mechanical responses of the physical mind and the desire-self, rooted in the physical vital. Most often it is mistaken for the person but it is really just the outer surface personality. Its seat is in the physical body.

Behind this outer being is the inner being which is larger and less constricted and hampered by the body, opens to the universal currents of forces and energies. It is in fact our subjective being with its thought structures and feelings, larger ambitions as well as idealistic formations that drive the engines of our inner life and thereby impact our outer life as well. It opens horizontally – to the cosmic consciousness around, vertically – upwards towards the higher states, and downwards – to the subcontinent currents that arise from our own and the earth’s subconscious past. It is the inner personality which in a way describes us. It is rooted in the mental ego.

Still behind this is a third layer of personality, our true personality so to say. It is constituted of soul movements, soul energies, soul forces taking the form of thoughts and feelings and will and aspiration. It is open to the divinity in all things and is the real cause of our higher upward and Godward strivings. It is this that gives true meaning and direction and purpose to our life. It is our true psychic personality and holds within it the key to our past formations as well as the blueprint of the future. Its seat is in our soul or, when fully developed, the psychic being.

Behind it all is the secret soul, the person behind the personalities, the witness of God in the hushed sanctuary of the heart, the divinity within us, the doorway to the Divine immanent in all things.
